Hi All

Anybody know if there is a bus service that runs from/nearby Five Acres Campsite at Beetham, Chard to the town of Chard?

Thanks

Laura

Hi Laura, is it just Chard you want for a bus?   the campsite is on a very minor road, and there wont be many buses there. You may be able to get one from just down the main road to Honiton. If it is specifically chard you want. it is not far to drive or ride a bike to. Although I have nothing against Chard, it is a very small town. It will not take long to walk around.

Thanks for that - we have a motorhome and sometimes its easier just to catch a bus or walk rather than pack up and drive somewhere.  Sounds like we'll go to Honiton if Chard's on the small side

Laura, Chard is very small, we love Honiton though, it has a market day, which is great, and if you can get up early you can park in the car park, unless you are very large. The shops there are great, lots of independent ones, lots of charity shops to mooch around, cafes, Antique shops, especialyl down the bottom of town there is a Antique shop that is a collection of sellers under one roof, if you know what I mean, have I sold it to you yet?

I would plump for Honiton, or the other way is Yeovil, which also has lots of nice shops. Have you been to Five acres before?

Don't think you'll find much in the way of buses in the vicinity unless you walk to Buckland St Mary and there may be a servict to Taunton from there.

Thanks for all the info - sounds like Honiton it is then!!! Sounds just the sort of place my fiance and I love to find!  We have a motorhome that is 3.5m in length and isn't usually a problem parking apart from when there is a height restriction.

If you haven't been to five acres before there is just one quirky thing, the toilets are in a seperate block from the showers, nothing wrong with that, but just unusual! also pay heed to the warning about not turning into the Five acres farm yard, it is just before the site, go past it down the lane to get to the caravan club site. Otherwise you will have to back out and it is tricky!

When you live in Somerset you get used to living without buses I'm afraid but I don't know why everyone has a downer on Chard. I like Chard. tourist info:

http://www.touruk.co.uk/somerset/som_chard.htm

Chard is famous as the home of the first powered flight (no you are quite wrong - it was not the wright brothers)

http://www.chardmuseum.co.uk/Powered_Flight/

It was also the home of the first woman cabinet minister and Chard is also famous for pioneering artificial limbs.

So much to do & see in and around Chard.

Err We're local and I'd choose Honiton over Chard anyday!

Chard in recent times looks worse than it ever did, it has a lot of boarded up shops and isn't very attractive.

Honiton has a nice high street, lots of charity shops (if you like that sort of thing!), some antique shops and food shops all within an easy walk.

You can also get the train from Honiton to Exeter Central and go to the museum, cathedral and the bigger shops there.

Chard does have a very good carnival, usually in September.

If you go there pay a visit to the Farmshop at the top of Snowdon Hill just outside of Chard toward Honiton, excellent local produce of all types.

Wow! Thanks for all the information - especially Bandjo with the information on the farm entrance - we haven't been to Five Acres before - this is only our 4th time out as we bought our mh in January - can't believe we didn't do this sort of thing before - it's glorious to just get up and go and even better when the UK weather is as gorgeous as this!!! Hope you all have a fantastic Easter break whatever you're doing

Chard is not a pleasant place regardless of the history associated with it.

Definitely Honiton and Exeter over Chard and Yeovil. Farm shop is called Farmer Barleymows. Chard reservoir is ok to walk around.
