First site I would go for is Abbey Farm in Burscough - not bad a drive once you are on the A59.    Not many sites this side of the Mersey, that take tents.

How long is your son in Alder Hey for?    If need be what about the Ronald McDonald House - ok from all accounts there is the odd idiot that abuse it, but is is on site.  .

Word of warning - parking at Alder Hey is a nightmare.   However you are given time to look for a space - can't remember off hand if it is 15 or 30 minutes, if I think on tomorrow i will check - and if you don't find one your ticked will let you back out without payment.    People often end up parking on Alder Road  and other surronding roads.

Either Fishpool Farm or Delamere Forest - check them out on here- Lovely country sites about 30 minutes from Alder Hey. We live just down the road and had to take our 9 year old to AH when he was a baby. I endorse previous comments on parking!

Willowbank site just south of Southport is a well equpped site with all facilities. Near to the main Southport to Liverpool road, and convenient for buses into Liverpool if you do not want to take a car.

Willowbank no longer take tents.
Unless they have very recently started to take them again.   The tent symbol on the sign pointing into the site was still blacked out at the weekend.
