We are picking up our first caravan soon and are keen to get away for a weekend somewhere within 90 mins but preferably less than an hour from Gloucester. My OH is booked on a CC towing course in June but is happy to go away before this but is a bit worried about tight access roads/ country lanes etc etc and if we forget something we can always go home. The purpose of the weekend really will be to get used to the van, working out what we need and having a go at putting up the awning.

Can anyone suggest a site with easy access and good size pitches within our search area. I like the look of Lincoln Farm Park at Standlake, Cotswold View and the CC club site at Broadway but any other suggestions would be much appreciated as thinking about it we dont need a site with loads of facilities as I expect we'll spend all weekend playing with the van and awning!!

Don't know any specific sites but I would suggest using the site search function on here, find your nearest site with the minimum facilities you want (I would suggest EHU and a toilet block should do)  and pop round there in the car without the caravan to check what it's like.

You could look at it on Google Maps and Street View as well, or if there is one further away you are keen on...

EDIT: Actually, just remembered Lucksall Park just outside Hereford, if you're a CC member. Very nice site and pretty easy access, from what I recall.

We have been to CCC at Winchcombe and Plough Lane Chippenham both are very good.  Both are easy to get to.

Broadway CC site is brilliant, the lower section has very nice large hardstanding pitches, the shower/toilet block is superb, easy walking distance of Broadway itself, at the top end of the site is an old railway station with pictures of the old trains etc, you would love it!
cant recommend it highly enough!

Would agree with the previous post. Also there are two other CC sites which are equally as good and they are, Moreton-in-Marsh and Cirencester both have large pitches and very easy access and are within a very short walk of the town centre.

Hi savanne,

i know you specifically didnt want a site with extra facilities but for all your other requirements you cant beat Cotswold Hoburne. Excellent easy road access and it only takes us an hour on the nose door to door travelling from the Forest (6pmish time on a Friday!). Close enought to Swindon caravans should you need any replacement/new caravanning items.  It has a great park in case the kids get bored hanging around the caravan and with this glorious weather you may appreciate the opportunity to take a refreashing dip in the outdoor pool (also has an indoor pool in case the weather breaks). Althought it promotes itself as a lively park, the facilities are away from the touring field so there if you want them and peaceful if you dont!

We are thinking of going the weekend beginning the 20th May and it comes in just under 50 quid for 3 nights.......yes thats the bummer you have to book minimum of three nights but booking the sunday night means you can have a relaxing late stay on Sunday and effectively gives you an extra day to play with  your new caravan :)

We have also got a Bailey Bordeaux so happy to help out if you have any teething problems

Sue

About an hour from Gloucester is Bridge house Campsite at Lechlade on Thames. Drive straight in off the main road (very little traffic noise once on site) stopping at the security barrier of course, into a huge flat grassy field. EHU pitches are marked but very big and easy to negotiate. Non-EHU pitches are not marked...just find a space.

The area is lovely with plenty to see and do and within a few minutes walk of the town, shops and pubs...what more could you ask for. I am booked to go on Monday and the 'over or around 60's club' have a meet there in August.

thanks all, will look at your suggestions.

Sue, that explains why I can never get a 2 night booking at Cotswold Hoburne as I have tried several times to book and the online system says nothing found. Its only about 30 mins from us and would be the ideal site for our first trip. I dont mind the 3 night minimum as like you say we wont have to rush on the Sunday and at under £50 for a family of 4 its good value imho.

Broadway CC site full for our dates unfortunately.

Bob61, thanks for your post. We like Lechlade and being able to walk into town is a big plus, definetly going to look at that one.

Nelmo, thanks I forgot about Lucksall, driven past many times and stopped and had a look round last year. Our kids would love the canoeing so think that will be our destintation for a weekend at the end of June.

savanne1,
Would be interested to know what you think of this site. Please do a review when you come back, I have been thinking of it for next summer, as we might not get to France.
There is so much going on with us next July and August, we dont have as much time as we would normally have to go on holiday. So if we cross to somewhere in Britain, it will still feel that we have "been away".

I will definetly do a review for you nee-naw. We've booked a superior pitch, not sure what the difference between that and a standard pitch other than £1 more a night. I'm going to ring them and ask for a pitch away from the road too.

Looks as if you get a guaranteed "pea shingle awning area" as opposed to a "where available" one, and a hedge!

Hi Savanne

so glad youve gone with my reccomendation, unfortunately our plans have changed,  dd is coming home from Uni earlier than planned, so we wont be able to meet up .

As regards pitch selection, our particular favourites are 80(there is no number 79 for some reason!) to 76. As they are near but not on top of toilet block 4 and have a nice big open sunny area behind the pitches. They are also away from the roadnoise that i can imagine can be heard from the other side of the site.

This is the best map of the site ive been able to find     http://www.caravanbreaks.co.uk/downloads/site-map.pdf  , just in case the ones i suggest arent available you can get an idea of the campsite layout.

enjoy

Sue

If you're in Gloucester - is Tewkesbury CC too close for you?

It's a nice basic site close to the town centre.
