Finally got most of the kit together to make a proper holiday from camping. Last year we had a weekend fairly local to home, which went well.

My problem is that physcologically, I see camping as a overnight/weekend away thing to just enjoy and hark back to my youth. What I need to do is find somewhere where we can use the campsite as a base, whilst still making a "holiday" out of it, if you get my drift.

We live north of Dundee. Ideally, wouldn't want to drive more than 4/5 hours as the kids are fairly young still. Looking for suggestions on general destination, as opposed to specific campsites. Ideally with a few attractions relatively close by that would suit kids 5 & under.

Really want to get somewhere booked, as I fear this summer will pass us by before I put any of this gear to good use....

Thanks

How about Northumberland you have the beach, Ford and Etal with a little train, Morpeth has a farm, there are farms in Bewick, Alnwick Gardens and Castle, lots of National Trust houses/gardens, seahouses, Farne Islands, Bamburgh and the Castle and Hadrians wall to name a few.

Thanks very much. I'm surfing my way through visitnorthhumberland.com right now. Looks a lovely part of the country!

Preference is for smaller, more basic campsites. Tent footprint is a fair size though (Gelert Zenith 6) - hopefully that won't be too much of an issue. Happy to cook for ourselves more often than not, and neither of us are big drinkers (how boring do I sound??)

Thanks for pointers though

lovely, small, and the friendliest site we have been to..
it's in Seahouses, close to lovely beaches, trips to see the seals round the Farne islands and enough castles to keep you busy for a year..

Thanks again folks. Booked 5 nights at Springhill Farm in July - got limited by availibilty. In truth, probably long enough to be away, young'un will only be 4 months old.

Thanks also for the Brighouse Bay suggestion. I might just go there on my own with the big kids for a weekend between now and then and leave the Mrs with new bambino for some peace & quiet.
