Hi
We live Hull (East Yorkshire) so have been to quite a few sites in the North Yorkshire area,
here are a few we have visited over the 7 years we have been camping:
Golden Square Near Helmsley, Black Bull just outside Pickering, Wolds Way which is set quite high up so can be windy but very friendly owners and lovely site.
Naburn Lock on the river going into York - you can catch the river boat into York.
Wood house farm which is near Ripon (Yorkshire Dales area) Brimham rocks is great to visit from there.
Our daughter is now 12 and we have always camped at sites with good play areas and decent facilities. I think the one we have visited the most is Golden square which is very kid friendly.
Last year we went to Northumberland (Ord House country Park) lovely area but site not really for kids ( a lot of caravans)
In May we are going to Cote Ghyll (North Yorkshire moors) which sounds nice as well.
Electric hook up? that is the question? Depends on what you are like as people I suppose, the first 3 or four years we didn't have hookup but now we do. When its cold you can put a heater on, have toast and tea in the morning, plug a radio in, have lights that don't keep failing . If you are going in August it will get dark and be bit chiilier then early summer. I would say yes, get hook up. It will just make it a bit more civilised but it does put the price up
We went to France in 2006 without anything like that and i think back now and it was not fun, it rained a lot and was quite cold in August and we were debating whether to leave early but we stuck it out but it has put my husband off going with out electric and a few luxuries
