Don't go for the isle if wight then as the ferry there doesn't seem much cheaper or easier to work out.

You are probably paying more for the trailer than for the car and passengers... can't you use a roof box?

If you can travel overnight you can get some good deals. You would need to cross before 5am, and return after 10.30pm, but we paid £63 last summer on Wightlink for Renault Kangoo & trailer on an overnight deal.

Also, there are quite a few IOW campsites doing special deals whereby you pay a set price for your camp fee & ferry. I think most of them are with Red Funnell. Check out some of the campsites & look for the special deals.

You have left it too late for cheap bookings at the peak times you want. If you want to go next yr. book in December/Jan & you should get under £100 return with trailer. The caravan show normally has an offer code for Norfolkline/DFDS that gets posted on the abroad forum, look out for that & you should get a return for about £70.

There are loads of lovely places in the UK. I live on the edge of the North York Moors and you couldnt find a better place for a holiday. We are near to the Yorkshire Coast as well for beaches and seaside resorts.

We love Northumberland for nice beaches, historic attractions and peace and quiet. The Lake District is good for scenery and walking but gets very busy in the peak season. The Peak District is less commercialised but there is also less in the way of tourist attractions. We also like Devon and Cornwall but again it needs to be off season for me. Oh and we also like Norfolk - and the West Coast of Scotland!

All of these places will have some fab campsites. You need to pick an area then use the search facility. I suppose that some of the more popular sites will be booked up in August but I am sure there will be somewhere that suits.

Good luck, hope you find something.

Try Landguard at Shanklin and juggle the dates to get best deal at present its around £16 a night for the pitch I paid £77 for the ferry via them for car and caravan. it will be more per night in the school holiday main dates.

or how about Devon/Somerset ? give Thornleigh at Horton a look. its 40min from Lyme Bay, and Beer, Seaton,  an Hour from Weymouth or North Devon, Cheddar,  and also from Torbay and Dartmouth. very nice quiet site and only £15 per pitch (4+2) with hook up. very easy to get to anypart of that area for visits. see my reviews.

Believe me there are far nicer places in the West Country and Wales than IOW. I have been to the Isle of Wight twice, it is a nice enough place but I refuse to be shafted by the various rip off ferry companies to get over there. You'd be better off using the £80+ to drive further afield.

exactly what I thought. infact I have decided that if the children are not too over the moon after this months trip, I may well not take the August Break on the Rock and have two weeks in Devon in August rather than one and one on IOW.

I always pay just the deposit untill last poss moment so as to only have to loose £25 rather than whole amount.. a week on the Rock will be around £600+ by the time petrol food and spends has been added with the holiday cost. an extra week in devon will be £350.  so watch this space there may be a booked holiday available next month, on the IOW.

I can always pop down and stay with family on my own, the break is child orientated.

I havent looked at the prices for August but we have booked to go the end of June with Red Funnel and i paid for my tickets using Tesco clubcard deals which means the ferry cost is paid for.

There are plenty of excellent sites here in the UK.  You should find a good site almost anywhere.  Choose the area you wish to visit first, use the campsite search on here and read the reviews, then ask further questions on the thread.

We like Cornwall, Dorset and Pembrokeshire, often influenced by the milder climate in the South.  All these areas get busy during the main school holidays, and pitches often will appear to be more expensive if you want a site with pool, entertainment etc.  My Cornwall favourite at the moment has to be Globe Vale, just outside Redruth.  Immaculate site, no pool, v. small bar and place to get very reasonably priced cooked food, friendly, small site, reasonably priced.  Read the reviews.
