So you’re one of those crazy people who decide to come to Shrewsbury for their holidays? (although maybe as a local I’m a little prejudiced against my hometown!)
Joking aside, I’ve driven past Cartref a few times and it looks a nice little site!
You may be interested to know that the Cross Gates pub in Ford has been renovated (it’s about half a mile further down the A458 from where you turn for the campsite), haven’t been yet but it’s been revamped as a country pub/restaurant and is supposed to be nice. Also, in the neighbouring layby is Dinkys Dinah truckstop café, who do the best sausage and egg sandwiches known, very popular with people travelling to mid wales!
Depending on when abouts in August you are going, Shrewsbury Flower Show takes place in the Quarry (town park), it is quite expensive (presumably to keep us horrible little locals from going), but is quite a good day. The firework displays on Friday and Saturday night are excellent. Shrewsbury Castle is interesting as well!
Although it is a bit of a pain as they are setting up for the Flower Show, the Quarry is nice when the weather is good, pay a visit to The Boathouse pub, it’s quite dear but nice on a good day.
If you plan on spending the day in Shrewsbury, I would recommend going to the Oxon Park and Ride (this is signposted from the main road) it is cheaper than parking, quite reliable and less hassle than driving into town.
Going further afield I would well recommend a visit to Ironbridge Gorge, and also in that neck of the woods is Blists Hill, this is a living museum from the area’s industrial past and is great for all ages, it even has a Victorian chip shop, pharmacy and sweet shop!
