Posted on "abroad" forum but no replies so will try on here!

We're travelling from Dublin Port to Co. Kerry and want a nice campsite (for the first and last nights) that's on that route and within a couple of hours max. from Dublin.

Has anyone any recommendations please.

Here,

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6925

Would be about midway between Dublin and kerry, but closer to dublin timewise because it's all motorway . There isn't a huge range of campsites in the midlands but this one is only 10 minutes off the motorway.

The only other site (that i can think of offhand) between dublin and "half-way to Kerry" is Camac Valley but that is literally just outside dublin.

Where in Kerry are you staying ?

Thanks for that, I'll have look at it later.

We're staying at Mannix Point at Caherciveen - we booked for two nights last year and ended up staying for 6! I think it's the best site we've ever stayed at.

If we stay an extra night this time we'll miss the ferry home! Not that would worry me too much....

Hi Brenda,

There a few sites in Co.Wicklow which not too far from Dublin.I have not visited any of them as I have not been to Ireland yet,but I am going to Stranraer on Tuesday for the night and then getting on the Belfast ferry on Wed.morning.We are driving along to the Sligo area and staying at the Greenlands Caravan and Camping Park for a week at Rosses Point.I was also reading about the Mannix point site and was one of the sites I was considering.

This might be a wee bit too far but I recommend Streamstown Caravan and Camping Park, Roscrea, County Tipperary. Just west of Roscrea on the R491, 120 km from Dublin. Small, quiet, clean, nice free showers. We stayed there for 4 nights in 2007. Interesting places in the area, especially Birr Castle with its giant telescope. For 70 years it was the biggest telescope in the world (not many people know that) Plus lots of abbey ruins etc.

I think Camac Valley is your best bet for breaking up your journey. The roads are great for much of the way to Kerry it's only the last bit that's bad. I'm going to The Apple in Tipperary in a fortnights time and then on to Cork. I can go home via Mannix Point so what's so special about it? All the reviews seem to suggest people stay extra nights! I'm curious now....

Right, I've booked Mannix Point for the last two weeks of July, with an overnighter in Camac Valley to break up the 6 and a half hour drive. I had planned to go to Tipperary and Cork but Mannix Point is so well reviewed I phoned this morning and have got a shore front pitch.

To the OP - when are you going? Are you already there perhaps. Anyway I'm so excited I'm doing the happy dance!

If you happen to have good weather in Kerry, then Wavecrest is lovely, but there isn't much  to do apart from go to the beach, 10 miles from the nearest town. It does have a good shop, but no cashpoint when we were there.

Anne
