some sites charge for tent car and 2 adults with an extra charge for additional cars children dogs etc this tends to be sites with set pitchs and limited space . just as an example . We went to a site at kettlewell in the dales for a weekend there where 4 small tents on the level area nicely spaced then five cars park on the rest of the level area no one around so we had to pitch on the slope . the owner of said cars and tents had been walking got back to there cars tents then packed up late to go home More cars =less tents = less money unless you charge for them  

You can camp with out a car  Train Bus cycle walk and motorbike .

Re pre booking this use to be normal never had to book a site for years but now i agree it seems a little strange not to be able to book . but the lakes gets bad weather and even when people have booked they dont turn up . so you turn campers away to be left with empty pitchs .

We're paying extra for my daughter's car when we go to Shamba in August, it's £4 per night which I don't think is unreasonable as it will be parked in a secure car park (ie not on our pitch with our car)

On top of the normal fee we're paying £4 extra per night for my daughter and son (19 and 17) and £4 for her car, I think £12 per night is good value for both of them to be able to come with us

Sometimes extra charges will be there for good reason and to prevent people abusing the campsite, it's not just holidaymakers that want cheap temporary accomodation. ISTR B&Bs getting stung when charging by the room and then ending up loads of people cramming into a small room, this in turn spoils it for normal customers who don't want to come back and the result is B&Bs end up charging per person.

I quite like some extra charges, a size surcharge for anything smaller than a C&CC pitch tells me to avoid it as the site is cramped, a dog surcharge will attract me as there are likely to be less dogs on site if there aren't special dog facilities.

As for other charges, they are not significant as I'll add up the total and work out if I think it's good value.
