I want to stay at Loch Ken in August. Nerver visited thiis area before, site and reviews look great but can you tell me if I am gong to encounter midges in August here?

We were at a site amongst the trees and near a stream at Aviemore a couple of weeks ago, the week after at another similar site on the west coast. Midges no worse than normal, no bother at all. I have booked to go back in July. I have camped in worse, so am always prepared. Don't let the stories scare you. Loads of factors can affect midge numbers for good or bad. It doesn't mean because you are in Scotland it is a done deal! My worst bites ever was in the Lake District and I still go back! Take midge repellant and plenty of citronella candles.

They apparently have midge eaters on that site. So saying, I didn't come across any in the surrounding area either last August.

Heading to Loch Ken a week today. I didnt expect the midge to be quite as bad in the south west of Scotland. Am always well prepared with my candles+skin so soft though. Wont let those wee blighters ruin my trip
------------- 2015 Trips
January - Red Squirrel
February - Red Squirrel
March - Gimme Shelter
April - Elie
May - Noah's Ark
May - Riverside, Skipton
May - Blair Castle
June - Braithwaite Bridges
July - The Star
July - Witches Craig
July - Scone
August - Highburn House
September - Gimme Shelter
We were at Loch Ken weekend before last - they seem to quite like the Skin So Soft! Didn't ruin the trip but they were definitely about, I would say take a few different repellents just in case one doesn't work! Lovely site though, esp if you're not using ehu,
Mairi
------------- April/May - Georgia destroyed in high winds sob
May - Loch Ken, 1st outing for the wolf lake
July - Waterside House, Lake District
July - Inside Park, Dorset
We take 'Mosquito coils' with us wherever we go, and Skin So Soft (works for me but not for OH), The mozzie coils really do work & usually leave one burning in the awning (in a specially-bought teracotta mozzie coil holder so it's safe) if the pesky beasts are out in full force. Citronella candles are good, too.
Have a good time - the scenery's worth a battle with the midges

If Skin so Soft doesnt work, try Smidge......only came across it a week ago, they dispatched immediately, and so far so good......doesnt smell bad either...but seems to work.
Just come back from Auchnihillin (Inverness - booked from on here they were very helpful) and beng fair skinned I have many blotches around both wrists and scalp. So yes the midges were biting and the downpour on Monday and Tuesday didn't keep them down for long. Citronella candles are a very useful reminder and I wish we had taken some.

Funny - I was camping just outside Inverness at the weekend too and didn't see any midges at all. It must depend on the particular site and weather conditions.

Depends on the weather. The slightest bit of wind and they cant fly, so will be confined to sheltered spots.
I use any reppelant with DEET in it. It is quite a toxic ingrediant, but it's the only thing thats 100% effective for me. I find Skin So Soft rubbish, but I know other people like it.
A fire helps too, but most sites wont allow one, however some will allow them if it's in a fire pit or BBQ, and as long as it's under control and you supply your own fuel and are not chopping down trees and fences..

I've had good results with Smidge, too. They sell it at the shop in my village and another person I know likes it. We were at a Rubber Ducky Derby on a bad midge day and he said he didn't get one bite, while I had Avon SSS on and did get bitten. So, I've got Smidge now and I haven't had a problem, since.
