Can anyone recommend any campsites on or very close to canal tow paths.

We are new to this motorhoming lark & recently discovered Greenhill Leisure Park where we spent an idyllic day walking the dogs along the canal & would like to do much more of that on many different canals.

Our base is in Dorset so while the canals of Scotand are beautiful they are a bit impractical for a weekend. If anyone can recommend any sites in the south of England they would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you are a member of the C&CC but the Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club site at (you guessed it) Devizes is alongside the Kennet and Avon canal. You don't have to be a member to stay there but it costs more if you are not.

Just outside the gate of the Devizes site is the Three Magpies public house which has it's own campsite at reasonable rates. About a mile further along the canal towards Bradford on Avon is another pub, The Barge Inn, which also has it's own campsite.

Have you thought about the River Thames? There are numerous campsites along the Thames and you can walk the Thames Path which is pretty similar to a canal towpath. One of my favourite sites is Bridge House at Lechlade in Gloucestershire and another is Benson Waterfront in Oxfordshire.

The above sites are all in the UKCS Campsite search.

I agree with Bob, Devizes is excellent with a nice 2 or 3 mile walk along the towpath to the town.

Minnows CC site near Tiverton, Devon has direct tow path access to the Grand Western Canal.  Within easy towpath walk of 2 pubs.  The site is near a road though.  Check out the reviews.
