Hi all, new member here.

Im planning a camping trip to Glen Nevis in August (w/c 20th), I have always wanted to walk up Ben Nevis and cycle around the area, see Loch Ness etc. Just me and my sturdy two-birth tent & bike, wife and daughter doing their own thing.

My one concern is the infamous midge, I react quite badly to insect bites and have read some pretty gruesome stories on tinternet about peoples experiences with the dreaded midge.

Can I expect to meet them in late August? In the Glen Nevis area?

Any advice on how I can prepare and protect myself would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Yes you will i'm afraid, I used to live on the isle of skye, they are horrid things, there will be less of them though. Some folk swear by Avon Skin So Soft, although it never worked for me, it did work for a lot of the islanders. I have bad reactions to them too, if you are walking I would invest in a netted hat, to protect your face.

I ended up having to use Deet Jungle Formula as nothing else worked, I still have the scars off the little blighters!

I too react badly to insect bites and it's sometimes years before the scarring becomes barely noticeable.

I spoke to my doctors who prescribed me some antihistimine tablets which I had to start taking the week before I went on holiday and continued for a week after.  I think it was called Loritadine or simalar and you can get it from most pharmacies over the counter.

I also use Jungle formula products or the Avon Skin So Soft (green lid) and that helps.  I also have a little zapper which I use immediately when I realise I have been bit.

Thanks guys.

My plan-

  • Eat lots of garlic for the next month and take some garlic capsules with me.
  • Eat lots of marmite the week before going (love marmite).
  • Smother myself with Avon SSS.
  • Take antihistimine tabs.
  • Avoid wooded areas, shade and still water.
  • Never stand still.

That should do... for starters
