Yep...have been there that late and the weather was great..along with the scenery
Beautiful colours including the heather.
To be honest, none of the campsites we've used have been that far from civilization, but you could check out New Forest Camping & Caravanning Parks. I'm not sure what you're looking for on site, but you can have a look here, and there's plenty of info on location/facilities etc.
Personally, I don't use any of these sites anymore, as I feel they've become too expensive. The campsite search facility at the top of this page is an excellent resource though.
Good luck with the hunt and welcome to UKCampsites
What will you be camping in? Most of the New Forest Holiday sites close in September except Setthorns which doesn't have toilet/showers. Are you looking for a basic site amongst the trees or something with a bit more?
We came back from the New Forest about 2 weeks ago.
We drove around and we preferred out of all the Forestry Commission sites the site called Roundhill. It a bit more off the beaten track than the others. I would advise to avoid Hollands Wood as it's right next to a busy road going into Brockenhurst.
Brockenhurst is a lovely village/town is you need to visit shops and things.
We stayed at Black Knowl CC site and it was set well within the forest with no near roads. As soon as you step out of the campsite entrance there are various paths to take and horses right by the gate. Site very peaceful but as with any CC site - quite regimented once you get inside with pitching and stuff. So if you are after a more relaxed pitch where you want sort of sites the Forestry Commission sites may well be for you.

Red Shoot campsite is very good - look up in Campsites Search It's right in the forest, is open October, plenty facilities including a child-friendly pub. I haven't camped there but was hiking nearby so went on site for a good look around and chatted to some campers who said they were very pleased. Have had lunches in the pub, though not for several years, and they were good

Have just returned from Hollands Wood... as previously said, by busy road. Might be better in late season but personally, wont be visiting myself. A small site that caught my eye was called the Red Shoot camping & caravanning site. In the forest on the way to Linwood. Right next to a great pub [the red shoot inn] and no busy road noise!
