Hi all!

I have squizzed through the reviews but getting a bit boggled looking through them all as I have already booked Chy Carne, but wanted to know more about the local area as it's been a few years since I stayed down that end or Cornwall.

We are going camping there for 4 nights Mon-Fri 22-26th August and as you may know if you read my recent post searching for a site, it is sort of a 'mini-moon' as we marry 2 days before we go. We will have our two LO's in tow (2and 5), and be on a very tight budget. I have a couple of ideas from other posters but wondered if there were any hidden gems of places/things to do or visit that don;t involve more than, say, half hours drive (cost of fuel and all that!). Not bothered about Lands End, did that in 2009 when we stayed up near Newquay.

Anything quirky nearby? Or even the more commercial stuff that's worth a visit with young kids (will try to find money off vouchers or something if they are costly)? Of course I know there are lots of lovely beaches too, I know of Mullion Cove (last went in the early 90s though!), Kynance Cove (last in 2003) etc- but if you would like to refresh my memory as to other beaches that's ok!

Thinking also if the weather is rubbish, if there is anything to do indoors etc?

Going to make a list of all suggestions as we need to budget wisely (something we find hard doing- seem to spend £400+ in 4 days.. HOW?!). Will be all about picnics and cheap and cheerful places to eat rather than expensive places.

Any help appreciated- the site itself looks gorgeous.

T x

Roskilly's Ice Cream makers (nr St Keverne).  Free Entry.

Cornish Camels. Between Goonhilly & St Keverne.  Free Entry.

Seal Sanctuary at Gweek (Pay to get in)

Lizard (National Trust) - for a walk.  Lighthouse might be open.

Beaches at Kennock Sands (Car park at the bottom - v. narrow road - always space in car park when we have been) & Kynance Cove (National Trust Car Park and then a bit of a walk).

....... that's a start anyway.  Best pub  from Chy Carne is probably the one in Lizard village.  Not keen on the one near the beach shop, close to Chy Carne.

Flambards at Helston might be expensive.

I seem to remember there's a chocolate factory somewhere, but it's just a quick in and out visit.

Healey's Cider Farm (FREE) - that may to too far up near Perranporth.

St Michael's Mount (National Trust).

Goonhilly Earth Station is now closed.

Remember that the Free places come with a hidden price - not many would go to Healey's without buying cider or Roskilly's without getting some ice cream.

Glad you've got sorted with a pitch.  Never been to Chy Carne, but it looks good.  Not been as our visits to Cornwall usually correspond with the UKCS meet, which I think we might find a little too much for us - we tend to like a quiet time!!

Thanks, that's a great start- dont mind spending some £ just not going OTT every day for 4 or 5 days. I just read Goonhilly is closed when I googled- nooooooo!! Hehe I liked it there...

will check out the other places. To get to the village is it a far drive/walk etc?

They are free,  we loved it there, the camel place is nice you walk down the lane, and its like going back in time to all the old barns etc, then have a cream tea inside or out.

I went on the Chy Carne meet last year, and am again next week wooo! Another place we loved was Marizion, yes there is St Micheal's Mount but there's also a really good playground, make sure you visit that too.

We drove down to Lands End one day, didn't spend too much there, and had a lot of fun. Also we visited St Ives.

we are having to charge £3.00 per night this year to hire a fire pit, you also have to sign a health & safety form LOL, health & safety gone mad, our public liability has shot up this year for allowing fires grrr

Hi T,

Not sure if you shop at Tesco's but if you do, you can use the clubcard deals to pay  for tickets to Flambards, Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, Maritime Museum at Falmouth and the Eden Project!

Hope this helps, or should I say Every Little Helps!

Nicky

Hi,

Poldhu Cove at Mullion is a nice beach, as is Church Cove at Gunwalloe, and neither of them are too far to drive. Also well worth a drive to Porthcurno for a look at the Minack Theatre, and another beautiful beach. The Seal Sanctuary is highly recommended for little ones -and big ones if you're anything like me, I love it! I have to say, as you are only there for a short time, I think you will find that you can't fit everything in, rather than be stuck for things to do! Oh yes, we also while away a bit of time at the public viewing enclosure at Culdrose, but depends if helicopters are your thing!!

Have a great time!

Kate x

PS - I can't believe Goonhilly has closed either!!! I loved it!!!

We spent a week at Chy carne last year and went to lands End, it was very misty that day so walked to end, had a picture argued about not wanting to see Dr who exhabition then went to St Michaels Mount as the sun had come out.

We loved St Michaels mount as you can park just behine the beach for about £3 all day. We've got national trust membership so went up the mount.

Did an evening at Lizard point and watched the sun go down - NT parking there too.

Helston is a nice little town with some little shops Peacocks if you've forgotten swiming shorts and a nice park at the bottom of the hill.

We enjoyed a day at St Mawes going over on the little ferry made it more interesting.

With the ukcampsite meet we had discount for a few places such as banger racing, cream teas which were very nice but i can't remember the name of the place, but it wasn't far from campsite.

If going to St Ives is it best to park at ... saltings and catch the train in on a day ranger ticket.

Haven't taken the car into St Ives for years.  Just wondered what parking was like at the Station Car Park in St Ives, near to Porthminster Beach.  I have disabled permit - just wondered if it might be easier to get parked in a disabled space?
