Hello, i'm new to camping and so far have only been once but was very disapointed with the site and a bit put off. The site we went to had the tents so close that the tents guy ropes next to ours where mixed up in with our guy ropes. I'm not sure if this is normal when camping but would like to give it another try with a bit more room.
I've tried the search facility and still have no idea where to try. We would like a site no more than 1.5 hours drive from Nottingham, clean showers/toilets with a plug socket for hairdryers etc and somewhere to refreeze our ice packs. Maybe in some woodland or near a stream/river, although that isn't important.
Any suggestions are welcome!

Oh that's such a shame you've had a negative experience . Hopefully your next one will be much better.
As we have a caravan I can't advise on whether this is "normal" but I'm sure it isn't! Sounds like the site owner was packing as many in as possible to generate as much revenue as he or she could!
As we've not really stayed in the area you're looking for a site in I can't really advise. But this site is great and I'm sure someone will be able to give you some good recommendations - good luck

Have a look at the Camping and Caravan Club site at Teversal which is only about 40 minutes from Nottingham. Best shower block you will ever find and being a C&CC site they insist on the 6mtr gap between units, Nice walk up Silverhill wood opposite and a really nice pub doing good food just down the road about 300mtrs, The Carnarvan Arms.
check the reviews on this website and you will see what I mean about the showers. Everybody raves about them.
Thank you, I will look into those 2 sites. I have seen the one at Sherwood forest as we fished the lakes next to it and have also heard good things about Teversal. They are both only 30-40 mins drive from me so would be good for a couple of nights away midweek sometime.
Please don't be put off by your unfortunate experience - tents so close to each other certainly isn't normal, and as Mrs E says it does sound like the site owner was trying to pack in as many as possible.
I personally haven't been to either Sherwood Forest or Teversal but I have a friend who has and says they are both good sites. Give one - or both - a try, I'm sure you'll have a much more positive experience.

Look at Blackbull at Pickering, we also live Nottingham and its 1hour 37 mins for us. Its brill. Or Elm Cottage at Chester about same distance, we off there next weekend. Again a brill site.

click on the campsite search above. Then click on central England and look at Derbyshire There must be something there to choose from. Less than 1 hour from Notts.
Hope its not too late, but we would really recommend Westbrook Farm Park just south of Ludlow if its not too far from you.
Its a lovely site with large allocated pitches each with hookup, water and tv point if needed. The toilets and showers are excellent and it is set in an apple orchard right on the banks of the river Teme with good fishing so I've been told. They have freezers in the laundry room for ice packs as well!
In fact if you look at the review of our tent, the photos on there show the pitch we had at Westbrook!
We have just come back from Teversal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our pitch had a rope fence seperating it and conifers to seperate us from the 'road'. We even took the dog for the first time and he was welcomed by all the wardens. The showers were amazing and it was such a different experience from Common End Farm.
Just looking through the recommendations now about where else I can book to go
So glad you enjoyed Teversal (especially after recommending it) it really is a nice site. Hope this has put the negative experience behind you and look forward to a lot of quality camping in future.
The reviews of sites on here are invariably honest and reliable as its other campers posting their experiences. Build up your own virtual brochure to list the sites you would like to go. As Ratty (the website controller) would say, don't forget to leave a review of Teversal and the site you didn't like as it will point others in the right direction of finding good sites.
