Well, Google Maps suggests the A537 Cat and fiddle road as your route from Preston to Buxton via Macclesfield, but given the Cat and Fiddle road is famous as a biker road specifically because of its many twists and turns, I would suggest an alternate towing route to Buxton, perhaps up the A6 via Whalley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith?

Hi, we live near Grinlow if going in your direction we always go over the Cat & Fiddle (towing or solo) then Macc & Knutsford onto the M6. There is now an average speed check on the Cat so the road is alot slower with less bikes.... it's personal choice I only drive to Stockport when I have to! I find it congested and slow.

We've been to Grin Low a few times from Wigan. We always go round M60 to Stockport then the A6 to Buxton as mentioned before. No real hassle.

We just came home this way today (as stated above "Cat & Fiddle (towing or solo) then Macc & Knutsford onto the M6."), towing a twin axle and it was very twisty but was ok.  A road Top Gear should definately film on lol.

Grin Low is not far from Buxton - beautiful and drive a bit on to Bakewell - beautiful.  We stayed at Blackshaw Moor, Leek but wished we'd stayed at Grin Low, purely because the towns nearer were better.
