Morning campers.... (I bet loads of people have said that.......sorry, I'm new).

New member and first post. I am looking for a campsite (preferably a reasonably lively one.....not somewhere with 4 tenst in it) where campfires are allowed.

Pickering, Lockton, Dalby Forrest area is what I am aiming for but not tied to it. Please feel free to advise of anwhere you know of in that general North Yorkshire area and I will check them out.

Thanks guys.

Hi (and welcome along!!) many of the sites in the Dalby Forest area have to be really careful about fires because of the risk of moorland/forest fires.

I am sure Brow House Farm just outside Goathland allows camp fires, never been there myself but I drove past it today and there were quite a few tents and caravans. I think its a basic site but fairly relaxed in terms of rules so it might be what you are looking for.

If you want to know anything about the area I know it fairly well if that helps!

You could try Low Farm at Ellerburn near Thornton le dale.

Camp fires were allowed last year, might be worth giving them a call to check it's still ok.

its a fair old run from selby to dalby forest though
last time we were up in dalby , early may ( when it was summer) fires and charcoal barbecues were banned as the moors + forest were tinder dry

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the feedback. I'll look in to those.

I am currently a very fed up a frustrated city boy who desperatley needs a break :o).

I have been to festivals but not proper camping so I am pretty knowledgedless on the whole subject (locations wise at least). All I want to do is get out of the city for a while, Do some walking, hiking, exploring little places, climbing (nothing too serious), hire a bike and ride through a forest and stuff like that. Basically get my hand dirty and graze my knees like a big kid for a week. This is why I was aiming for the Dalby Forest area.....as it really the only place I am mildly familier with...

...But some of the campsites I have found that do allow campfires are not exactly near the forest but some further north near Goathland. But if I did stay near Goathland....whats that like? and is it far from Dalby Forest anyway? (I will have my car with me anyway).

Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks again.

goathland is not too far from the main area of dalby ( where alot of mountain bikers go) a few miles maybe but pretty sure its a bit of a climb ( by bike) to reach there from goathland , sure theres a stretch of 1:3 or 1;4 heading that way. if you can cycle into the main area of dalby its free . take the car and you have to pay but loads of tracks and trails for you once there....should keep you busy for a weekend !!!
enjoy

Goathland is a fantastic place for walking - right on the Moors and there are plenty of bridleways in the area too. Very hilly though!

If you want to do Dalby Forest you would really need to drive there (unless you are very fit!) it costs £7 for the day and would only be about a 20 minute drive from Goathland. Well worth it though and you can hire bikes from Purple Mountain Bikes if you dont take your own.

The North York Moors steam railway has a station in Goathland so that gives you another option for transport - although quite expensive.

At Goathland you are also not far away from the coast at Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. More walking and biking available there and you can bike on the old railway line from Scarborough down to Ravenscar. Its a really stunning part of the world and I think you would love it.

There are a couple of campsites in Dalby Forest itself - Pexton Moor Farm is one I think but you wouldnt be able to have a campfire.
