Hi

We are off on our second camping trip tomorrow to Brighouse Bay in Scotland and I suddenly decided I'd like to go away at the end of August, but finding availability with EHU is proving difficult.

I stumbled across the camping and caravan club and wondered whether joining a club like this or similar, is cost effective and worth it and can you book late?

TIA

C

You can book the site as a non member but there is a non member fee,  usually  staying  5 days or more over a year, covers the joining fee.   Should it be more cost effective to be a member you can join on site.

So the question is do you think you will get 5 days use in a 12 month period.

If you decide to join ask on here for a member and they get a free gift for recommending you.

It is to also £10 cheaper to pay by direct debit.

As for booking late, same with any campsite, the more popular it is, the less chance of a vacancy.  Check with site first.

With a tent yes, the Caravan Club only have a limited number of sites that accept tents where as every C&CC site will.

If you have a tent and wish to join a club then the C&CC is the only one that really caters for tent camping. However, I think it only fair to advise you of my experiences to date.

I joined in May this year and decided to go to my first club site not too far from home. I wanted an EHU pitch but when I checked out the online booking this was showing EHU pitches fully booked. Undaunted, I telephoned the club bookings and they still said there were no EHU pitches available. Ever determined I phoned the site directly hoping they may have a cancellation and was told they had more than one EHU pitch available.

So lesson 1...phone the sites directly because the online booking system is not up to date.

After all that, when I arrived at the site I found the pitches in an awful state with rabbit holes, some quite deep, making it difficult to pitch a large tent without placing the sewn in groundsheet over a hole...not impressed, although I had no complaints about the rest of the site.

My second attempt to stay at a club site ended in failure. Because the site was so popular it was necessary to book at least two weeks ahead. Not a long time one would think but all club sites insist on a deposit up front and if, like me, you have to cancel due to adverse weather conditions which you could not have anticipated two weeks earlier, you don't get your money back nor do you get a credit.

Again undaunted but now out of pocket I booked the same site a little later only to find on arrival that every pitch was totally grass-less. Because the site is so busy they fill every pitch regardless, without any grass recovery plans, and you end up having to pitch your tent on a combination of hardened earth and roots...not very pleasant especially if wet. On this occasion I got my money back and went on a private site just up the road which had beautiful pitches.

I have been searching for other club sites in the south of England but they are actually a bit thin on the ground and well away from the advertised location i.e. the one at Cheddar is about two miles away from Cheddar. Lots of CS's and I may try one, but most have few facilities and for a solo camper many are as expensive as a commercial site.

Needless to say I am not impressed with the C&CC. I will persevere throughout the rest of this year and see if I can find something that warrants the joining fee but I am actually finding better deals and certainly better pitches at ordinary non-club sites. At the moment I doubt I will join again next year.

I know others will say they have been to some lovely C&CC sites and I have seen photos of some with lovely pitches but not apparently in my area!

We were in the C&CC but didn't really find it of much benefit. Yes, you got cheaper rates if you were a member, but the prices were more expensive than non C&CC sites so not much of a bargain. We found this site much more useful to find good campsites, and of course it's free! The reviews are really helpful. End of August will be very busy because of bank holiday, try a bit more inland, away from the beaches and you might have more luck. If you didn't need EHU you might also have more luck.

I am a member of the C&CC and find them to be very good and well worth the annual fee.
Club sites are of a high standard with good facilities. I find the family deals help reduce the cost (every little bit helps!)

I particulalry like the CS, THS and meets which make for some fun and very cheap camping.
Last meet I went to cost just £5 per night for 4 of us (no EHU but for that price you can't really expect power too!!)

If you do join, please use my details!!!

As tenters, we use C&CC sites all the time now.

Sadly, our one foray into the commercial site world was a bit of a disaster even though it gets good reviews on here. We may well have been unlucky with our choice but with Club sites we have always found the facilities to be clean and well looked after.

We also get Age Concession rates and tend to go midweek and get 4 nights for the price of 3. We usually pay about £10 a night for 2 adults, including EHU.
