A few years ago we stayed at a lovely site in Norfolk. Unfortunately the whole camp was pretty much terrorised by vandalism. Two cars had side windows smashed,4 tents were slashed and the mess in the toilet blocks you wouldn't believe. We had our suspicions and two of us hid at each end of the site all night. No luck. Some people have a destructive nature as we have recently seen on our tv screens. I have no clue why they take such enjoyment in causing misery for others who DO NOT deserve it. But they obviously do.
Sorry to hear of the damage, but thankfully it seems minimal, the effect it has on you personally however wont be I think

I camped at this site in Langdale 40 years ago long before it became a NT site. We had ferral cats screeching around the outside of the tent most nights. Unless they have sprouted horns and grown razor teeth I would not want to blame them. I hope you will come to the conclusion that it was perhaps an animal and not human as I should hate to think this will spoil your camping experience for the future. I fully understand how you must feel however and how insecure you must have felt for the rest of your stay.
How awful! What strikes me is that even if you were being offensive in any way (and you quite obviously weren't) slashing someones tent is not the right way to go about things. We have perhaps all been annoyed with others actions at some point when camping but I doubt that any half decent person would slash someones tent in protest. This alone leads me to believe it was an act of random, mindless vandalism.
