Not sure if this is the correct forum or not so please forgive me if it isn't, My husband & I bought a little two berth van a few months ago just to see if caravanning was our thing or not, we've been away with it twice just local to see how we got on & it truth we both loved it so are looking to go away for a little longer then just a weekend, obviously we're absolute beginners at this but we do know we're not looking to go to one of the big caravan park places, the site we visited when we bought our van was only about 40 mile from home but a lovely place with space for only around 20 or so vans but we would be just as happy on a smaller site....Thing is we fancy the idea of Scotland but haven't got a clue where to go, we were thinking of maybe the west side but are quite open to anywhere really, To tell the truth we don't have a lot of cash to spread around so our van only cost us £800 so not as posh as the one we pitched next to on our 2nd trip out where the people sort of looked down their noses at out little 1992 Sprite for pitching next to their 6 birth sparkling white van with all mod cons, ( ours doesn't even have hot water or a shower but we've fallen in love with her ) Basically we want somewhere to head for maybe as far as Ayr or a wee bit further stopping off for a few nights here & there on the way. I'd also like to ask if you always have to book in advance or can we just follow signs & turn up ( is there much chance of finding places that have space ) also if we get caught out can we pull into a lay-by for the night ? is it legal ?.......Thanks in advance.....O we're traveling from North York's....

Hi

We to have just purchased our caravan a few months ago,Swift Corniche,1986 in very good condition she is,we wallpapered her, cleaned her up,repaired non working items,eg fridge and she looks lovely to us and we have named her Betsy. You will always go on a site and see newer caravans and sadlysome  people do turn their noses up,but frankly that's their problem.

The West Coast of Scotland is the most scenic place in the UK,very beautiful, amazing beaches with clear water and white sand. There are some sites on here near/at Arisaig which I believe are very good.Never been to any here, but visited area which is just beautiful.Plenty to do,visit Skye etc and even Sanna Bay which is very scenic.

I am not sure if it is legal or not to pull into a layby, but to be honest around there I do not think anyone would complain and I know people do it,especially in camper vans.

All the best and happy caravanning!

Jane

avoid caravan only sites and look for sites that take tents too as you then get a mix of all sorts, big/small tents, trailer tents, old and new caravans etc...

Scotland is a large country with vastly differing scenery and terrain, there is no such thing as "typically Scottish" countryside.  It is like wanting to go to England but not knowing whether to go to East Anglia, the Midlands or the Lake District.

I would suggest going to the VisitScotland website and deciding which area suits you.

Culzean castle site is lovely if you're going to the west coast around Ayr.

Site info

Always got a nice welcome at all the sites I've visited in that area too.

If you fancy going to the SW of Scotland then you would probably like the Caravan Clubs New England Bay site. It is a bit out of the way, but it is quiet and peaceful, even though it is a large site there is a lot of space between vans. You can walk directly off the site onto the beach.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Hi, the Culzean site just outside Ayr is lovely, but so is the wee campsite just across the road from it, sounds like your cup of tea, Thomaston Farm, Maidens. smashing views. Also, I would recommend Portpatrick, Castle Bay a bit further South in Scotland or nearer Dumfries, Castle Point in Rockcliffe.I have mentioned them in my blog, and other lovely dotes in Scotland. Have a peek.

Hi
I'm hoping someone can tell me of a campsite on the Isle of Bute.
Last time I was there, 20 years ago!!!, I rough camped near Rothesay but I like a little comfort now. I'm planning a trip in May/June 2012 with tent and dog.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thomaston Farm is lovely. We don't do big sites. Don't know about Bute, had a great aunt who lived there, went with parents in early 60s.

Hope its not too late bearing in mind you orignally posted on 9th August!

When I was a kid we used to regularly take the trailer tent to tour Scotland and then got into climbing in my twenties. One campsite that holds very dear memories for me is the Glen Nevis Campsite in Fort William. Although a large site it is split up into smaller fields giving it a much smaller feel, not too expensive when I last looked either. Very good facilities and a good shop on site, they also have their own bar and restaurant 5 mins walk down the road as well which being offsite cuts down any chance of rowdiness. The location is superb, right at the foot of Britains highest peak, Ben Nevis, and Glen Nevis is one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland (I can recommend the walk from the car park by the waterfall at the end to a hidden valley with breathtaking views). Being in Fort William there is loads to do and is an ideal base for exploring some of the most fantastic scenery in the country including Glen Coe.

Also the site itself attracts all sorts including campers and caravaners with no snobery at all, I remember a trip one easter when temperatures got down to minus 5 at night which was bad enough in my little climbing tent but I really felt for one chap who was camping in a bivvy sack!

Ok folks, I thought I would reply as I'm orginally from a town near Ayr although I now live "down south" as we Scots term it.  (I live near Blackpool!)    There are plenty of campsites around Dumfrieshire and Portpatrick which would suit Frisky Ferret and not too much of a drive from North Yorkshire.  There is a caravan club site in Ayr called Craigie which would probably suit.  Easy to walk into Ayr town centre.  Another good site which has been recommended to me (but not been personally) is Garlieston which are smaller sites.   New Galloway and Dumfrieshire has some lovely sites with lots to do if you like walking/have a dog.

Friskay Ferret - if you are relatively new caravanners then you do not want to drive to Skye & Oban etc.  it would a lengthy drive from Yorkshire.  When we started caravanning in 2009 we spent the first year only driving about 2 hours from home so that we could build our confidence up towing on motorways.  The following year we had enough confidence and toured Southern Ireland after driving to Pembroke for ferry to Rosslare.
