hi been looking round at sites e-mailing and ringing them trying to get a pitch at short notice,hopefully for the bank holiday ! dont want to book 3 months in advance what ever happened to tuning up ,i know you cant do that with the massive tents and all the associated gear, but can anyone tell me about any sites that i could just turn up or ring day before and go,have been looking on the east coast, scarbor 'o, whitby filey etc or lakes keswick only need ..A...toilet /shower B...pub (nearby)...ha ha . will consider any site reccomended up to about 100miles from Bury Lancashire...thanks

You can just turn up at the National Trust sites... of which there are a few in The Lakes (Wasdale, Great Langdale, Low Wray, Hoathwaite..). The one at Langdale is in a great setting with 3 brilliant pubs in walking distance.
Never been to eother but they are on my list. It isn't quite clear whether you can pre-book or not, but would be worth a quick call as they look like nice basic, quiet sites.
Oh, also Syke Farm in Buttermere you cannot book - you just turn up and pay at the farm up in the village. There are a couple of nice pubs right by the site entrance.
As with all of these types of site I'd say during high season you need to arrive early to secure a pitch. We stayed in April and Syke Farm was virtually empty.

Yes Side Farm can be very busy, not stayed there myself but did use the facilities once when walking past and they were nasty - dirty and lots of graffiti which I haven't seen on a campsite before! Put me off.
