Are you saying your a fair weather camper

Dead right...and proud of it...but the sun shines on the righteous so I get plenty of nice days to go camping

Incidentally, I have not booked anywhere for this weekend so there are no vacant pitches

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

We had a C&CC site cancel US the day before we were due to go because of the weather & yes they did refund us.

I'd give the site as much notice as possible to fill your spot if you're not going as there are probably people who want your pitch whatever the weather forecast.

I think the C&CC allow you to cancel up to 7 days before you go before losing your deposit. The irony is that if you turn up at the site and then can't erect your tent due to adverse weather conditions they may refund you but if you just phone up on the day and tell them the weather is too bad to erect a tent they won't. Also, if you have to leave the site due to bad weather they will refund any remaining credit but this is at the discretion of the manager. It seems the weather might prevail but common sense doesn't.

...and incidentally, if you do cancel and lose your deposit then somebody phones up and gets the pitch, they don't contact you to give you your money back.

I think sarcastic comments about people not wanting to go camping in bad weather is a little harsh. I think anyone who goes camping in bad weather when they don't have to is an idiot.

Camping is supposed to be a fun break/holiday/pastime etc. Not a trial of the fittest and a test of stamina! If you are not going to enjoy it because the weather is treacherous then what is the point in going?

I am able to go camping pretty much anytime now that I am retired. I usually book up a couple of days beforehand once I have a good idea what the weather will be like. I made a mistake this year (on two occasions) by booking campsites well ahead of time. One was a C&CC site which was a very popular site and in order to be able to get a booking there, one has to book at least two weeks in advance. Nobody can predict the weather that far ahead so if the weather in the last few days turns bad what are you supposed to do? Go anyway because you are macho and trying to prove you are a hardened camping nutcase and risk losing your tent or accept the weather is too bad and cancel? I cancelled and lost my deposit. The second time was due to other circumstances beyond my control but in this case the campsite (not C&CC) gave me a credit for another occasion.

I have learned my lesson (never too old) and won't be booking early again. If I have a choice of possibly losing my expensive tent to the elements or cancelling a booking then I will cancel a booking. If anyone has a problem with that, especially if you think the campsite is losing out, please feel free to phone the campsites when you know there is a gale warning and fill my vacant pitch...I'll even let you use my non-returnable deposit
