Thanks for all the tips Nicki77   We will definitely look into those next year.  We saw the white horse as we were driving back from somewhere (can't remember where) but only from a distance.

We've been to Stamford Bridge many many times but this is the one in London (being a Chelsea FC fan ) but never the one in Yorkshire!!

Can't wait to return next year,  and yes I agree with Ina - we much preferred Yorkshire to the Lakes.

For TM

And if you're in that area, Fountains Abbey is a must

http://www.fountainsabbey.org.uk/

Nearest "dale" would be Nidderdale - Pately Bridge area, only a short drive from there. Although not officially part of the National Park it's still very beautiful and most people think it should have been included within the Park Boundary. The theory is that when the boundaries were being set up, the then Bradford Council were planning to flood an area of Nidderdale to make a reservoir so it wasn't included.

Having said that, both are still a reasonable drive from the Wharfedale area, or from Helmsley area in the other direction.

no-one on here has mentioned Brimham Rocks, the rock formations are stunning (it's nice because they are all named because if you look at certain angles they resemble things),

I've heard of them and they are on my 'to visit' list for next year but not sure where they are.

There's also loadsa watersports (Jet Skiing etc) around Hornsea, which is a small coastal town and also near Pocklington (which is in East Yorkshire but only around 15 miles from York)

I went on a free narrowboat ride on the Pocklington Canal in May, only fifteen minutes out and fifteen minutes back but very peaceful and really nice on a sunny day.

Brimham rocks are near to Patley Bridge. This is a good base if you want to visit the Yorkshire dales. Skipton,, nice market town with canal boat trips Malham, for the cove and tarn. Gargrave and Bunsall are some of the places nearest to Patley Bridge. Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough are all nice towns to visit. Tigermouse you would love this area, beautiful  green countryside lovely area for walking.

We're regular visitors to Grassington, and always take a trip to Brimham rocks when we're there.  We've created a family tradition of taking a photo of us all on the same rock every time we go, and it's fab looking back over the years to see how much the kids have grown (and we've aged!).

Bolton Abbey is a lovely place to visit too, you can spend a whole day there by the river.

Nooooooooooo !!!!

We don't want them "Londoners" turning Yorkshire into Cornwall !!  (which is practically like London outside of London )

Thanks for that, looks like I'm going to be taking out a National Trust membership next year and looking for campsites in that area.
