Hello, I wonder if anyone could tell me if there is such a site (a farm site maybe) that offers pitches around lambing season, with an opportunity to be involved, as me and the kids would love to help out with something like this.
The location would preferably be more towards the north than south.

Thanks.

Steve.

Sorry, don't know of any up north, but Trevayne Farm in Saundersfoot fits the bill.

Hi Steve

Brylea near Preston, we are staying there this weekend and have just read a review where 'Rustyfrog' says

"It was lambing time. We managed to watch one being born and my OH bottle fed two little orphans"

The review is on the third page of the sites reviews.

Hope this helps

Peter

The Milky Way, but its south nr Bideford bay, lots of lambs to feed and if yor lucky you might see one born, best time to go is around Easter, but there is an admission charge as its part of a children's petting farm.

The Chatsworth House Farm is another one where not just lambs, but Shire horses, Piglets and Calves are bred and can be fed by the visitors.

Full working farms can be dangerous places for young children, and most operate an Adult only' policy when they hire their farm hands for the peak lambing and harvest seasons, its also worth noting that sometimes birth can be traumatic, and something that may frighten a child with the amount of blood about and the screamings of the animal. You also need a degree of knowledge as to what you are doing, and whats normal in the birthing process and what isnt, not something you can easily learn overnight. The right way forward would be to do a short course at your local agricultural college before you went away on this type of break.

We do keep sheep on my Dads farm, but the latest batch of ewes have only just arrived, and are settling in the paddock ready for meeting the ram, so no new lambs expected until next spring there, otherwise i may have been able to arrange a visit for you to have got close up and personal with one lol!

We have had campers come for lambing, they have become good friends of ours now over the years, their son can often be seen on the back of the quad feeding the ewes

We don't mind taking children in the shed, however have to agree with above, sometimes it isn't pleasant and can be traumatic for little ones. On the plus as I have said above we have campers who come every year and spend a lot of time in the shed, everyones different.

Not quiet hands on with births but Wolds Way near Malton let you feed the lambs that the mothers have rejected. It is prob when they are a bit older(feeding times are displayed in the reception/shop) but you could phone the site to enquire, The owners are very freindly and go the extra mile to make everyone happy.

The site is one of the best around with excellent facilities and amazing views. They also have some cows and a bull called Sprout that are partial to the odd digestive biscuit. Funny to watch them running over when you approach them with a packet of biscuits.

If you cant watch the birth it could be a good site for after you have seen the births elsewhere and you want to extend the lambing feeling.

Shallow Grange farm at Buxton in Derbyshire,Ed is very keen to show campers and caravanners his sheep and labs at lambing time. We helped him rescue a very large ewe that was struggling whilst pregnant with triplets. Sadly they didn't make it but the ewe survived. A sad fact of farming and life but our girls still appreciated getting involved. They had a great time feeding the lambs this year and better weather too!

Locally we have a Donkey sancturay which is ajacent to the venue where our daughter held her wedding reception last Saturday, so it was only natural that she wanted to take the younger guests to have a few piccys taken with the donkeys.

All was going well until the male jack donkey decided he wanted to have apart of the 'wedding night action' as our daughter was stroking his ears and back, she could not see what was happening being right beside him, but the roars of laughter from some of the guests made her alittle suspitious of what trickery may be going on, and she moved away just intime as he reared onto his hinds ready for some action!

The moral of the story is never enter a pen or field with farm animals that you are unfamiliar with as you never quite know how they will react. although what happened was hilarious at the time, it could have quite ended up with our daughter suffering some serious injuries, and wedding day memories which were unforgetable for entirely different reasons to the ones she had always hoped and wished for.

She certainly wont ever live that one down, that donkey sure did fancy her!

She must have been hitting a few good spots with her strokings of his ears and back and gave him a right good turn on lol!

after returning from a brief honeymoon, she is now plagued and teased by her mates with greatings of EE-OR! whenever they see her around, and the place where she works is a day nursery, and when she returned to work last week her little charges had been busy making a paper donkey farm to pin up on the walls to welcome her back!

Little did they know or understand the joke her workmates had played on her, or why they were encouraged to sing the donkey song more than usual, bake donkey shaped biscuits, or make their Disney Ee-or cuddly toy sit in her seat at every opputunity, or why she now had a belated wedding present of a donkey sanctury mug awiting her at every tea break in the staff room! little beggars them lol!
