Rather surprisingly, apart from a confirmation e-mail, I have not heard back from them yet. Usually whenever I have contacted them before I have had a reply within 24 hours. Perhaps opthers have contacted them about the same issue.

I suppose I should reinforce the fact that my concern is about touring using several Club sites on the same holiday, not about going home early from a stay at one site where it would be reasonable to pay the fee although as Ina points out it does seem discriminatory to only punish those who are actually on site. I am sure the Club would argue that it would be difficult to impose on people who had not already paid their site fees but this is hardly equitable. Watch this space!

David

But David how can they charge a cancellation fee to people who are not onsite if you don't have a deposit system, which I know you are not in favour of?

Agreed, but as I said in my earlier post: Whether the CC will argue that it is not possible to take 1 nights fee from people not on site is irrelevant IMO, the fact is that people can cancel from home without penalty, yet people already on site are penalised.

My argument is that it is totally unfair, if you impose these types of "conditions" for want of a better word, then surely they should be applied to everyone, not just those already on site?

As someone else has said, the whole thing seems rather badly thought out and is far from consistent.

Why should site fees be refunded if you choose to go home early? They're running a business for heaven's sake.

Nora

They are not though - they are and I quote from their website "The Caravan Club is run by its members, for its members." so I guess if we dont like it we can take issue with them.

Perhaps sometimes they think they are a business but if the majority of people dont like something they do, there is option to get it changed (local meetings, agms etc). Its not run for profit and if something if annoying the members even if it costs money they "should" listen. Isnt that the reason to join to avoid the "commercial" sites but often they seem less flexible than the sites run for profit which is a shame and shouldnt be so.

I was not aware of the 72hr requirement, last week we were at Ferry Meadows CC site and both my son and myself had really bad colds so we decided to go home a day early.  I went to the reception to tell the warden who immediately refunded me a full nights fee, no querstions asked, although she could see I was ill!  All I had to do was sign a form!

This is starting in 2012, so not applicable yet, hence your refund.

The CC is a business in a sense that the books have to be balanced and audited like any other business so decisions have to be made to protect balanced books. I agree with Ina that it should be the same for all.

Important Update

I have now got a comprehensive response from Ellen Shotts who is the Caravan Club's Product Development Manager - UK Sites.

Firstly the three strikes and you're out policy only applies to late cancellations and no shows, ie non arrival on site.

The charge for leaving a site early will be one night's stay, so whatever you paid for your nightly stay, not just the pitch fee. Leaving a site early won't count as a cancellation, so does not add you your tally of sites canceled within 72 hours of departure. The good news is that if you decide to leave a site early (less than 72 hours before planned departure) but intend to move to another Club site which the warden can book for you the extra one nights fee will not be made.

Thank you for that, David.

I'm not a CC member but have friends who are and tour about a bit as you initially described your trip to Scotland.

I think the only concern they would have now is that there are still a lot of places in Scotland where you can't get mobile phone reception at all ; If you're stuck behind an accident in a no signal area (five hours was my longest), it tends to cause problems.

It is still a pity that they can not find a penalty to apply equally to all those who do essentially the same thing. I find this lak of onsistency most unusual in the CC and hope that thy will lok at it again during the year. I am still awaiting a response to my email.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thanks David for posting the response.

Yes, it is good that if you wish to leave early, ie within 72 hours, and go to another CC site, you don't lose the 1 night's fee. But, UNLESS the member already on site moves to another CC site, he/she will still lose 1 night's fee.

It's also good that it won't count as a cancellation.

But I still say, and agree with Bill in the post above mine, that there is a lack of consistency in that the penalty of 1 night's fee does not apply to those cancelling from home.

I suppose against that is the fact that the member cancelling from home will have 1 cancellation against them which the member on site wouldn't.
