We found the answer was to go in the Spring . Yes , the mornings are fresh in the Highlands and Lowlands and a lot of visitor paid attractions are closed but the great outdoors never closes , nor do the The Cities that people love visiting . The Midges are still eggs and the roads are quiet . Scotland is better for a lot of us outside High Summer .

We've only stayed on sites right on the west coast, partly because of midge worries. We go in august and find the steady west wind straight off the sea tends to keep them at bay.
The only time they were an issue was packing up last year, the wind dropped completely and we got a small taste of what it could be like.

Hi,  visited end of July this year and september last year. Both times touring around  fort william alliscraig, mallaig areas.

Geared myself up both times for a midgy battle and didnt see many at all.

Site in Fort William near river ,but still hardly any midges.

Read up lots before went and stocked up on Avon product that many forums recommend. Maybe this helped.

We were up in the Stirling area in August and towards the end of the holiday the midges were horrendous, my hubby wore a baseball cap that was literally covered with them, it was heaving! Avon Skin so Soft is the answer, that and lots of citronella!
