Hello.

Although I have toured on the continent I have never done so in the UK because most UK sites seem to require pre-booking.

Now that more and more UK sites are in the Camping Cheque and ACSI brochures can anyone tell me please whether or not you can just turn up without booking as you can abroad.

A silly question I know but my experience of UK sites is that they can't seem to cope with unannounced arrivals.

Thanks,  DaveS1

Can't see any site turning you down if they have space.
There are only 30 ACSI sites so not a lot of choice.

I have camped for more than 20 years in the Uk and have never booked in advance, it does depend where and when you want to go but in my experience all campsites if they have room are more than welcoming

I think there is no doubt that site will take you when you 'just turn up' if they have space. The problem is that we in the UK have got into the mindset of booking, therefore there are more sites that are fully booked. You are therefore taking 'more of a risk' in just turning up. It then becomes a vicious circle. The more of a 'risk' it becomes, the more folk will be inclined to book. It's just the way things are at present.

Many thanks Guys : I think I'll give it a go.

It seems strange that I am considering it more of an "adventure" than going abroad !!

It definitely does depend on when and where you're going and how fussy you are.

We headed off to the New Forest (2 families with tourers), during the summer about 6 years ago, and hadn't booked anything. We phoned several sites whilst on route to the area and managed to find vacancies at about three or four. We did have to widen our search area to about a 30mile or so area but considering it was school holidays we weren't dissapointed.

A few years ago we set off for Worcestershire at the start of a bank holiday weekend. Unfortunately we had to return home because there was no where to stay in the area we wanted. That time we wanted a more specific location and the fact that it was a bank holiday meant there was just no chance!
