Bobby Shafto is the closest and is within walking distance of Beamish museum but reviews aren't great:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3831

There is also Byreside Caravan Park:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=4090

and Derwent Park Caravan and Camping Site:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2178

Both these sites are about 5 miles from Beamish.

Allensford Cavaran and Camping Park is a bit further away (about 10 miles)

I appreciate you say you are not a member of either of the Clubs but the Carvan Club site called the Grange at Durham accepts non members (at extra cost) and is only one junction down on the A1M from Beamish. BTW Beamish is wondeful .

This site, Finchale Abbey Caravn Park, is the next closest after Bobby Shaftoe.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3635

It's in an idyllic position. As the name says in the old grounds of a ruined abbey and right on the banks of the river Wear. I have never stayed there but as a small child had many happy days in the grounds and picnicing by the river.

It's probably only 15 mins to Beamish and 10 from the city of Durham,

I agree with HarryB, Finchale Abbey Caravn Park is really nice. My eldest and I stayed there a few years ago when my youngest was singing in Durham cathedral. There a lots of walks and there is a golf course near by. Its a bit off the beaten track, you need a car to go anywhere but I really enjoyed it. The ruins are nicely lit up of a night and there is a small basic shop on site. There river walks are good too!

I don't know if you have children but I'm afraid Finchale Abbey is an adult only site.
