We are considering the Isle of wight for our main holiday this summer. Anyone know Approx how much the ferry crossing is in August?

Thanks

You can get quotes online from Red Funnel and Wightlink. I think generally Red Funnel is cheaper but Wightlink takes Tesco vouchers.

Expensive! Think we paid £244 last August for a return trip with Wightlink, luckily I paid with my Tesco vouchers. You can get some good deals if you book it at the same time as some campsites.

The reason we started going to France was because one year we intended going to the Isle of Wight cos we hadn't been for years. When we looked at the price of ferries we were shocked, we discovered that Dover-Calais crossings are much cheaper and France is much nicer.

If you are a member of the C & CC you receive a discount off wightlink.

Ring them and they will give you a quote but even with a discount it`s not cheap !

I have an 8 metre van, both wightlink and Red Funnell wanted over £300. with the C & CC discount I paid £153 this year for August. Last year I only paid £140 so it`s gone up this year again !

I agree red funnel always worked out cheaper for us.

I also discover that by fiddling with the times the prices varied greatly.

In the end we went over appox 6pm on Friday, and came home lunch time Sunday 9 nights. It worked out cheaper doing it this way even after paying for the two extra nights camping.

However it was a pain to arrive so late and then pitch. We ended up chucking the tent up, doing the beds, the only other thing we got out was the cooker to make a cup of tea. Everything else was left till next day.

The other problem we encountered was the nine nights we were there it rained for 8 of them. It wasn't pleasant, the water just wasn't soaking away. And while we stayed dry the groundsheet rippled when touched due to the standing water. It hard and expensive to entertain the kids in the constant rain and tbh we'd had enough by the Friday. However we wasn't allowed to change our booking w/o paying a hefty fee. So we stuck it out.

Are you camping, caravanning, motorhome or guesthouse staying?

Both Wightlink and Red Funnel have special deals most of the year.

See if the place you are intending to stay at can book the ferry for you as they will get preferred rates from either or both of the ferry operators. Some holidays even include the ferry cost.Check these out aswell.

I have used Wightlink many times as it is a much easier place for us to cross from as we live 20 min drive away(go from Lymington, lovely seaside town 30 min crossing to Yarmouth)

Red Funnel go from Southampton, much more difficult to go round to and longer crossing(1 hour crossing to Cowes)

You may get there faster.....but we have beer in the fridge

We've used Red Funnel and booked the ferry through the campsite on the 2 occasions we've been over to IOW.
We didn't find Southampton too bad but we sailed on a Sunday on our outward journey each time. There is also more "holding" room at Southampton docks if you do arrive early!

Yes, the crossing is an hour but it depends where you will be staying on the island - you may be nearer to your campsite by sailing to Cowes, although nothing is too far away

We found Red Funnel was also cheaper than Wightlink. And, if you can go on early/mid week or a Sunday it may be cheaper than a Friday or Saturday.

We paid £114 for our return crossing for june. Thats with Wightlink so managed to use my tesco vouchers. Last year we sailed with Red Funnel and got a 5 day deal with the campsite. We ended up staying 3 extra days but only had to pay £10 to ammend the ferry date. Cant wait to go back this year. So much to see and do.

Weve always used the 5 day Red Funnel trip from Soton, the ferry and 5 nights camping for about £125! Bargain for a short break
