I'm thinking of having a few days at Rivendale later this year, and as I like to get out and about with my camera I'll be looking for some nice scenery to photograph. Anyone got any suggestions or recommendations for 'must see' places?

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Get an ordance survey map and get into one of the many dales for scenery. The opportunities a numerous. Many of the field systems are bordered with dry stone walls with symetrical patterns with the odd stone barn or lone tree to create interest.
The most popular dale and near to Rivendale is Dovedale with Thorpe Cloud and the river Dove and also the village of Ilam.
Go early or late in the day for the best atmospheric shots, especially in the autumn.
Dove dale is one of the most photographed places in England!! If you've never been there it is a lovely walk and even better to get up the hills near the stepping stones. Staggering views. Pride of place on our mantlepiece is a photo taken of my husband after climbing up there on his 50th birthday!!

I saw a calendar picture a couple of years ago of the stepping stones at Dovedale, I knew it was somewhere near Rivendale but not sure where the stepping stones are in relation to the site

Turn left from site and head for Ashbourne. Look for signs to Thorpe and Ilam to the right on this road. You then can't miss it. Probably about 5 miles.
If you get to Ilam then follow the road to Blore as you leave. The road climbs up to Blore and there are some good views towards Dovedale on the left.
Arbor Low, a stone circle and burial chambers, are just up the road. Very atmospheric. Dovedale is lovely but best not to go at the weekend, the upper end of Dovedale and Wolfscote Dale are equally as nice but less crowded. Lathkill Dale is stunning, walk in from Monyash down to Conksbury Bridge, constantly changing scenery with lots of photo opportunities.
Wetton and Wetton Mill are a further drive along the valley. The R. Manifold, a tributary of the R. Dove disappears underground at Wetton Mill, but only when not in full spate, it emerges again near Ilam Hall where it then joins the R. Dove.
Mark has made a very valid point about Dovedale near the stepping stones, it does get very crowded most weekends. Some of the others he mentioned will be quieter.

Dovedale is lovely - even better out of season as it's much quieter, especially if you get a sunny, frosty sort of day!
My favourite photo of the stepping stones!

I appreciate the comments Harry and Mark and I realise that if it's a popular area it will be busy at weekends, as are many other places I've been to, but unfortunately a weekend will be the only time I can go without using up days from my holiday entitlement. Now if I could win the lottery or marry a millionaire weekdays would be no problem!
