Get an ordance survey map and get into one of the many dales for scenery. The opportunities a numerous. Many of the field systems are bordered with dry stone walls with symetrical patterns with the odd stone barn or lone tree to create interest.

The most popular dale and near to Rivendale is Dovedale with Thorpe Cloud and the river Dove and also the village of Ilam.

Go early or late in the day for the best atmospheric shots, especially in the autumn.

Dove dale is one of the most photographed places in England!! If you've never been there it is a lovely walk and even better to get up the hills near the stepping stones. Staggering views. Pride of place on our mantlepiece is a photo taken of my husband after climbing up there on his 50th birthday!!

Dovedale and Stepping Stones.

Turn left from site and head for Ashbourne. Look for signs to Thorpe and Ilam to the right on this road. You then can't miss it. Probably about 5 miles.

If you get to Ilam then follow the road to Blore as you leave. The road climbs up to Blore and there are some good views towards Dovedale on the left.

Wetton and Wetton Mill are a further drive along the valley. The R. Manifold, a tributary of the R. Dove disappears underground at Wetton Mill, but only when not in full spate, it emerges again near Ilam Hall where it then joins the R. Dove.

Mark has made a very valid point about Dovedale near the stepping stones, it does get very crowded most weekends. Some of the others he mentioned will be quieter.
