Manorafon campsite is situated just below the ruined and supposedly haunted Grwch Castle near Abergele in North Wales. You can walk up to the castle through the woods from the site I believe.

Not been yet but meaning to call in and have a look round this year as it's not too far from us.

Hi 89angela.You can walk up to it but cannot walk round in it as there are gates and such stopping you now, big hole in one of the floors apparently. This doesnt stop the locals though.
The gamekeeper has lots to tell you though as he walks his dog there still.
Beautiful spot and a nice site.

We are very lucky to have quite a few abbeys very close to us in North Yorkshire. I have many fond childhood memories of my Dad driving us to one of the Abbeys and having a walk and a picnic or visiting a tea room.

Here's a link to a google search for abbeys in north yorkshire hope it works!

Fountains Abbey is the closest to us, and probably my favourite. A quick search on this forum brought up The Yorkshire Hussar Inn
I have not stayed on that site, but the reviews are not too bad and it's only 2 miles from the Abbey.

There seems to be a lot of campsites around the Skipton area that get mentioned on here quite a lot, so one of them must be close to Bolton Abbey. Ah ha, just found Strid Wood Caravan Club site which is part of the Bolton Abbey estate.

This is good fun, could spend hours doing this!

Hope it helps

Try Finchale Abbey, Co Durham, site right next to the ruins and the river runs alongside, no too far from the city.Jx

The C&CC site at Culzean is in the castle grounds - not a ruin though.

Only just noticed this site is featured in (and pictured on the cover of) the current (February) Camping & Caravanning magazine.

is a lovely site, very basic but perfect location. There is even a bar within the crypt of the ruined priory, perfect

And a lovely site it is to. It's our "local" C&CC site only an hour away from home and as we're NTS members with 3 kids the castle and grounds keep us amused for days.

Dunstan Hill site near Craster in Northumberland is a short but lovely walk to the atmospheric ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, also within easy driving distance are Alnwick Castle & Bamburgh Castle. Bamburgh is in an awesome location right on a massive expanse of empty beach.

Northumberland is great for castles.

Oh and if you like forts too - Hadrian's Wall Camping is really well situated for the Roman sites at Vindolanda and Housesteads - really fascinating.

But no so great for the weather

Had 4 days of solid rain, night and day last August at Alnwick Castle, sunshine at York on way up and sunshine at Lincoln on way back to south.
