My wife wants to go whitewater rafting near Bala. Can anyone recommend a campsite nearby which will alay her unfounded fears of the horror of camping!  I am a committed camper and  am optimistic that I may at last get her to join me on this occasion. I cant afford to make a mistake on this one.mind.

I've not stayed at Pen-y-Bont, but I had a look when I visited over Christmas and it looks really nice.
There is a C&CC site at Bala too, on the other side of the lake.

we have stayed several times. Love being able to leave the car and walk into Bala . The staff have always beend very friendly and helpful, and everything spot on.

Try Tyn Cornel. It's a very pleasant campsite indeed, but the thing that would make the difference is that the showers and toilets are among the very best I've seen on a campsite. If a reluctant camper knows that the facilities are of a high standard then their fears will melt away.

On the down side, depending on the time of year you go the midges are bad (though that is true of very many campsites). When I was there in (I think) 2007 they had a Midgebuster near the toilet block and it REALLY did work onders. With any luck they'll have put in one or two more.

A further bonus is that there is white water rafting on the doorstep.

I went to Pen y Bont some years ago in a folding camper. It was very, very muddy - not just that weekend, but in general. We had to wait for the local farmer to come and pull us out. I think they've put hardstandings down now. Otherwise it's a nice site.

The C&CC site is about 3 miles out of Bala but is very nice.

Well, I know that what one camper likes another doesn't, but consider this: it's a large and, for my taste, very commercial site. The lakeside situation seems attractive and we did consider it last year, but having zoomed in on it on Google Earth we went instead for Bwch Yn Uchaf. As we drover past Glanllyn on the way to Bwch Yn Uchaf we were immensely relieved that we had chosen as we did; for our taste it reall was too polished and too like "tent city".
I know that's just our taste and people have different preferences. But just a "heads-up".

Thanks for that info Former Scout. I think we have different tastes - I looked at your profile photos and the pitches like idyllic but I like more people around me when camping. So we've probably made the right choice for us and you made the right choice for you by not going there! Several years ago our parents camped in our tent. We stayed in it for the weekend (when the site was fairly busy) and then they stayed there during the week when there were only a handful of tents. It worked out well as I like people around me and my dad doesn't! That said I don't like yobs or loud rowdy neighbours so it's always tricky trying to get the balance.

Bwch Yn Uchaf just up the road does allow campfires.
