Oh dear.  What a nightmare for you.  Im sure you will get some fantastic alternatives booked.  At least you have a bit of time to sort out other campsites.

The entire Elvaston Castle site is the subject of redevelopment plans talks, with the house being in need of urgent repairs, and the local council saying they cannot afford the cost of its upkeep, so all kinds of commercial schemes are being discussed, including some which would turn the area into an 'admissions fee' earning venue for all kinds of sporting activities and events showground type of place, although there is strong local opposition and campaigns to keep it as an open public park with only the house being leased for commercial usage.

The other plan was to sell part of the land off for housing development, but as far as I know this has been rejected.

Derbyshire County Council have been trying to sell the castle and grounds for years, several schemes have been put forward but nothing decided as yet.  If the site needs urgent repairs doing it is possible that there is a dispute over who is responsible for paying the bill.  I'm not sure what would happen to the CC site if the whole estate is sold, I wouldn't blame them for not spending money on it if the site is under threat.  This is the most up to date news I could find in our local paper.

Well, as was inevitable, we had booked quite a few key dates at Elvaston as its very close to my family home. I called the CC this morning and many sites are already fully booked for easter so we have changed to a new cl to try that instead.
Its a great shame, I grew up playing in the grounds of Elvaston and it will always be very special to me. But you could see as the years went on that it was in dire need to finance and even the CC site was looking a bit shabby and very prown to flooding, several years ago we had a pitch completely flood while we were there and I gather that kept happening year on year.

We have stayed there a couple of times over the years and its a shame that another site has been lost to the network. I am sure there are others at risk around the country. My understanding is that Morn Hill at Winchester is part owned by the local council and part owned by the CC (separate sections) The Council seem unwilling to come to a sensible arrangement that would allow the site to be redevelped because one toilet block on the Council owned section is no better than the one at Elvaston Castle.

We only stayed there one night on our way home last year, but what a lovely little site and with some nice walks through the country park on your doorstep. What a pity - I had it earmarked as a good stopoff for future years.
