I live in Sheffield & do loads of camping in the Peak District, but we thought we'd go a bit further afield over the Easter weekend since we'd be away for a bit longer - it'd probably be the southern half of the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors, or possibly somewhere on the east coast south of Filey as we don't want to be more than 2 hours drive away. We can obviously search for sites in these areas, but since we don't have a fixed idea of where we want to go it gives us a massive range to look at, so we thought we could decide on a location based on campsite recommendations from people on here.

Things we like:
- small quiet campsites in rural areas/small villages
- tea shops
- scenic walks
- nice pub nearby (not essential!)
- no more than about £15 a night for a tent & 2 people

Not bothered about:
- what the toilet block is like, as long as it has toilets & warm showers in it!
- the campsite having facilities like a shop/bar/play area

Things we don't like:
- tons of children & noisy people
- big sites with loads of caravans
- midges

If you have a favourite campsite to recommend, please let me know! Just don't try and persuade me to go further away than the places I've mentioned, I'm the only driver and I want to spend as little time behind the wheel as possible :-)

Could try looking around the Dalby Forest/Pickering/Thornton le Dale area. I love Low Farm at Ellerburn

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=10753

It is a basic site but in a fantastic area. There is a toilet block in the camping field which does have cobwebs in but there are better toilets in the small static area which is over the road from the camping field. The showers are there and I've found them clean and hot. It is a short walk into Thornton le Dale where you can get supplies/pubs/tea shops etc. You can walk into Dalby Forest directly from the site which avoids paying the road toll to take a car in. The site doesn't take bookings but we've been on bank holidays and had no problem getting in as there have been very few people staying there.

Hope you get sorted

Looking at the reviews, that looks like our ideal sort of site! I prefer my toilet blocks without cobwebs, but it's low down on my list of priorities if everything else about the site is good. I really don't like campsites that won't let you book though, it's OK if there are loads in the area and you're not going at a busy time, but I'm hesitant to drive for 2 hours and risk finding that it's fully booked and we can't get anywhere else with it being the Easter weekend. Although if you haven't had a problem on bank holidays maybe a lot of other people think the same as me and don't go there then!

I think you're right, people are put off by being unable to book, which I can understand. Might be worth phoning the owner and explaining that your coming from Sheffield, he may allow you to book, he might even have changed it now so you can book a pitch.

Are you in a tent?

If you are in a caravan I would highly recommend Hillside, Nr Thirsk.  Lovely site on a farm, really quiet.  About 4 miles from Thirsk, local village pub is walkable but probably about 3/4 to 1 mile from site.

We're in a tent, sorry if that wasn't clear from the first post. Do Hillside not take tents? I know some places are only caravans.

It's certainly worth a try, it sounds like the sort of place we'd like. Thanks for the recommendation!

How about Hillhead farm at asquith near Otley, w yorks,  there is a very nice pub in the village serving good food, a tea room down the road a mile which has a good reputation and you have Bettys tea rooms in Ilkley and harrogate a stones throw away along with fab scenery, fewston and swinsty reservoirs for long flat walks, ilkley moor, the cow and calf rocks, plenty of places to eat in Otley and nice riverside walks in Otley and ilkley.  Also otley has plenty of real ale pubs if you like that sort of thing and a folk festival each year,  bolton abbey within an hours drive, i could go on and on, its a lovely area with loads to see and do  .J xx

I like long flat walks...living by the Peak District means I spend a substantial amount of my time panting up big hills while my mountain goat-like walking partners bound off into the distance. Honestly, it's like walking a pair of labrador puppies, not going for a walk with my boyfriend and friend.

Bainbridge Ings at Hawes (Wensleydale) ticks all your boxes. We had a really nice week there and love the Dales.

Heh - we stay at this site every summer when we go up to Whitby for a few days of the folk festival. I agree that it's a good site! We'll be going again this summer so I wanted to find somewhere else to go over the Easter weekend.
As it turns out, I ended up being persuaded into going up to the Lake District, where it was freezing cold and damp all weekend and it took us 6 hours to get home in the torrential rain despite only taking 3 hours on the way up there. I was unimpressed and have had to be placated with the promise of spending the May bank holiday somewhere in Yorkshire that doesn't involve as much sitting in the car with soggy clothes on!
