Trouble with the lakes is that market forces mean that most sites are £20+.

I can recommend one site called Chapel House farm near Borrowdale, south of derwentwater, last time we were there we were charged £6 each, so £12 a night isn't bad.

One word of warning, the toilets/showers are very basic. You even have to take your own torch at night but if you can live with that then the site is a little gem with stunning scenery and 2 pubs within 15 mins walk, yet the site itself is quiet except for the sound of sheep.

Thank you for your replies........... Sykeside looks lovely, so I have sent off my booking form.  After much searching, £20 a night seems about right for the Lakes.  Chapel House would probably have been ok for a stopover but didn't fancy it for any longer - but thanks for the recommendation.

Wasdale National trust site is set in a lovely location (quite remote) so if you're after quiet and basic site then it may suit.

Eskdale C & CC site again is remote but set in a stunning area.
