You could probably do the lakes in 1.5 hours from Stockport...as you can imagine there are loads of sites to suit ALL preferences and plenty to do if - you like the outdoors...The Quiet Site near Ullswater is nice, there is a small bar on site (something we usually avoid in a campsite, but this is nice and quirky in an old barn and sells real ale, nice facilities too). You can go on the Ullswater steamer, or kayaking/ boating on the lake, loads of walks in the area - Aira Force Waterfall is a good one and you can walk there from the campsite. Or get the steamer to Howtown and walk back along the path round Ullswater. Pooley Bridge also a couple of campsites and has plenty of going on if you prefer a busier place/ town location.

The area to the South of the Lakes around Arnside and Silverdale is also lovely if you didn't want to stay right into the Lakes. Check out Holgates, they own a big holiday park in the area with pool if you like that, but also some smaller less commercial camp sites. Morecambe Bay or Lancaster also worth checking out.

The Ribble Valley (Clitheroe area) is great. People rate the Clitheroe CCC site and it's a nice market town with lenty of pubs and a nice castle and museum if that is your thing. Pendle Hill worth the climb if you like walking and great views.

You could also do the edge of the Yorkshire Dales within your time frame - in particular the area around Ingleton. If you like walking the Ingleborough waterfalls trail is lovely and the caves are really worth a visit too - might appeal to your teenagers.

I guess it really depends what sort of site/ holiday you like - big holiday park type with bar and pool or small and basic or somewhere in between? What do you and the kids like to do? You might get more response if you give more detail.

Thanks
Bit of middle ground really. Not so quiet that it's full of oldies but not rowdy with drinkers from on site pubs
Pool wud be nice but not necessary. Got a 13 year old that needs something to do but don't fancy the big noisy holiday parks

I'd check out Holgates' website then, there is a pool (I think) and although it is a biggish holiday type park it doesn't seem to have the "Haven" vibe.

I haven't been myself since the 70's when we used to holiday there when I was a kid though!
