Can anyone recommend a campsite at Loch Lomond. I have searched on here but a lot of comments say they have a lot of road noise (we have a 2 year old), or they dont take large tents with hook up (we have a vango maritsa 600) It looks like a lovely area to camp but we cant find a site to suit! please help. We also need a dog friendly site! Thanks , claire

Look at the sites on the East Side of the Loch. The road there is a dead end road, culminating at Rowardennan. So the only traffic on it is either tourists or those camping along its length.

On the west side of the loch is the A82 and that is a main route used by both cars and heavy lorries. That road is very noisy.

This is the site that I would recommend for you.

And

This would be a good second choice

I don't know This site but is has good reviews.

All these sites I am looking at from the point of view of you taking a small child and a dog.

The Luss site is nice and if you are of the older persuasion and remember Take the High Road, then its location, Luss Village is next door. Very pretty it is too but an afternoon there and you have seen it, done it, bought the T-shirt.

Milarochy bay cc &c site is lovely. Great views across loch & u can even launch your boat direct from site. We stayed there 3 summers ago. Despite the weather we loved it. This year we staying at Luss site on our way to Oban & Skye.

We're just back (yesterday) from an 11 night stay in our caravan at Milarrochy Bay CCC site on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond. We had a super time with a pitch right on the lochside. The tent pitches are a set back from the Loch if EHU is required or there are some on the edge of the Loch without EHU.

I would, also, recommend Cashel Campsite which is a mile further along the "dead end" road along the eastern side of the lake. Although we have not stayed there we did go and look around last week. The wardens there were very helpful and allowed us to look around. The site is a Forest Holiday (Forestry Commission) site but they are now managed by the CCC. The Cashel site if more open than the Milarrochy Bay site, less trees, and a better view of the mountains as it has views north along the Loch whilst Milarrochy looks south. Cashel has a well-stocked shop.

Although we enjoyed our stay at Milarrochy I think we would choose to stay at Cashel if we returned to the area. Both sites are very quiet and peaceful and much quieter than the western shore of the Loch which is bordered by the very busy A82 trunk road.

The disadvantage of both sites is that they are both rather remote in their location when one wants to travel anywhere else. It is about 2 miles to the village of Balmaha which has only a couple of pubs and an expensive village shop and a further 5 miles to the larger village of Drymen. Balloch the nearest small town is about 15 miles away - that has more shops including a Co-op supermarket.

There are ferries and cruise boats from Balmaha and various other places around the Loch. We found Cruise Loch Lomond to be better than Sweeney's Cruises. Cruise LL give a discount for folk staying at CCC/Forest sites.

I will be writing a review but I've not done so yet. Please ask if you have any specific questions and I'll try to answer them.

Best wishes
Tim
