Hey all!

I said we wern't going on another hol this year as we have done Looe (static van at Looe Bay), and a Sun hol 3 night break (Haven Primrose Valley, nr Filey- again-static).
I can't go until 1st Sept, possibly 8th (providing my daughters school approved of the days off)- as I am at uni and on placement all summer.

But I want to go away again!

I haven't been camping since just after our wedding last August- we went to Chy Carne. It was ok- the campsite was a little quieter than I had hoped though and the weather hit and miss but we LOVE Cornwall. Did Trevornick nr. Holywell Bay camping in 2009 during a hot spell in June (first time camping and with a very young baby!).. LOVED it there.

Anyway- we need to purchase a car roof rack/bars and box, a new single airbed and new camp chairs. this will cost a fair bit and probably make the difference in what we would pay for camping and what we would pay for static but obviously to camp again ever, we need these things, so it would be an investment.

Question is- if we DO decide to go camping- where to go? As I said I love Cornwall, and I preferred it at Trevornick BUT I think the weather being so good had a big part in that. I have already been to the 'other' side of Cornwall (Looe) this year, as mentioned, so if we went, it would have to be somewhere on the West coast of Cornwall, but not too far south. Where could we go? I'd like Trevornick but I always like to try new places and areas, I just love that side of Cornwall though.

OR- do we try the IoW? Never been (well... as a baby in my mums womb in 1983 but that doesn't count!). I am not sure (will check) how far it is/how much travel time but Cornwall is over 5 hours from here. I also know it involved a ferry, does anyone know where to get this cheap? As I know nothing about the IoW- which area? Are they all pretty much the same? What's to do on the Island? Is it easy to visit all parts? Are the beaches nice? One of the things I love about Cornwall is the coast and I feel like I am 'home'- never lived there but it holds lots of happy childhood memories. But I like to try new things. A bit wary as last time I tried new things, we went to France camping and even though the weather was hot we came home early as it was boring and we hated it. We then went to Kent for a couple of days, which was nice, but that area just doesn't feel magic for me. We have also camped in Somerset which was a lovely area in is 'down that way'.

So... Cornwall? If so- where could you recommend (preferably coastal) , that is on the same side as Newquay etc (up or down coast)?

Or IoW? Is there much cost involved with ferries etc? Is it good for kids? Is it 'pretty'?

I will go off and see how far it is of course but wanted your opinions. Either way, the site must have EHU.

Thanks

TD x

Check out the Ferry cost to the IOW that may affect your decision cos it's not cheap. If you have Tesco clubcard vouchers you can use those to pay for the Ferry. We loved the IOW - plenty to see and do and easy to get around, nice beaches and great for walking if that's your thing.

The IOW didn't hold a candle to Cornwall for us. We stayed at Whitecliff Bay on IOW and it was dirty, run down and the pitch had a plague of red ants. Cornwall is gorgeous and unspoilt. We stayed at Bluehills campsite last year, and will be staying there again this year too. It's between Perranporth and St Agnes. I have the same feeling as you about Cornwall, I love it!

We went to Cornwall this Easter (not camping) and loved it. I am however missing the IOW as there are no plans to go this year and we've been for holiday / day trip for the last 3yrs. Driving on the coast road along the south part near Ventnor always reminds me of watching Bergerac as a child. We either use Tesco vouchers from Portsmouth and if not then Red Funnel from Southampton, play around with days and times as there are good prices to be had. (There's a great park on the harbour edge next to the Red Funnel car park where our kids always run off a bit of steam before boarding.)

We stayed at Whitefield Forest, depends what kind of sites you like, there are several which get lots of custom on here, look for ones with lots of reviews on the campsite search. We love the coast, pretty villages, the island is small so easy to get round, plenty of places to visit, nice walks and some great views to be had. I love ferry travel so for me the IOW has a big bonus albeit not free!

Forgot to add the East coast is more family orientated resorts, the west more wild, the south dramatic cliffs and the north lots of boating.

We always go to Cornwall. But
Last year we went to the IOW my OH didn't like it . I did .
As much as I love Cornwall and think there is so much to see and do even after having going there for years.
I think the weather on the IOW is slightly better. I didn't like sand down .
But loved the west coast , I feel I would like to have had time to see more of that side of the island. We were on our own so didn't have to worry about children. I loved the cycle trails, cowes and Osbourne house plus the garlic farm and red squirrels even though we only saw one.
I did say I wanted to go again but OH says no he doesn't want to. we are unable to go to Cornwall either this year.

Thanks so far peeps- didn't get chance to check ferry prices last night so will do later when I have a bit more time. Still torn- if I go to Cornwall I will probably end up thinking I wish I had tried something new, if we go to IoW I will probably end up thinking 'why did we not go to Cornwall'?! Will have a good look later, keep the replies coming x

Hi,
We have been to both areas, both are lovely, the only thing with the IOW is the ferry fare is expensive, you can use tescoclub card vouchers,
We are going back to Cornwall this year, will miss the IOW, but at the sametime have missed Cornwall so I know how you feel!!! We visited whitecliff the first holiday, and then Beaper farm, Going to Chy Carne this year so hope its as good as the IOW, You will have to book 2 holidays if you cannot decide which!!!
Good luck
Debbie

We've been to IOW twice now. First time was Sept 2010 - I loved it so we went back the following year in July. I'd love to go again this year but we like to go somewhere different on our "main" break.

Both times we stayed at Appuldurcombe nr Ventnor and booked our ferry through the campsite as we saved a bit by doing it that way. As you'll be in a tent the ferry will be considerably cheaper (than a 'van). If you're flexible on the times you sail you may be able to save a bit (not always easy I know).

There's loads to do on IOW - from great beaches to animal attractions, gardens, castles and theme parks.

If you decide to go to Cornwall - Tregarton Park nr Mevagissey is a good site - huge pitches, very reasonable prices out of season and good reviews.

Decisions, decisions .....

I love both places, the ferry isn't too bad if you go Red Funnel after 5pm. we stayed

We are returning in June to IOW for our second year.  We are staying at Whitefield Forest again.  We just love this place.  This year we are sailing with Wightlink but used my clubcard vouchers so did not cost a penny.

If you are not planning to go until September, then where ever you choose to go will be a little quieter.
