I want to visit north west scotland for a week with my wife, two young kids and a dog. I am looking for a site that doesnt have midges, if such a thing exists as i really hate them and the mrs will pack up and come home.
Open to any suggestions and quite fancy being in visiting distance of skye. My only requirments are ehu for large tent ,nice location (distance no object), and no dredid midges. Any help much appreciated
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Sites without midges in NW Scotland in Summer do not exist, they are always there to some extent.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Best advice would be camp close to the coast, a mild breeze keeps the little buggers at bay.
Having said that I have been on North Ledaig and been absolutely infested with midges. I love the Westcoast of Scoland but the little beggars eat me alive but they leve Anne alone.

We (me, hubby, and 3 kids) have just booked a pitch for August at Invercoe - they have anti-midge machines and reviews of the site say that they are effective.
The location is stunning and we have booked an ehu pitch for our Kampa Croyde which is approx 7m x 4m.

I'm afraid the north west is midge stalking ground. For a midge free site your best bet would be the east coast, however the scenery is a lot different and some would say not as spectacular.
In my opinion the scenery in the west is worth putting up with a few (billion!) midges. Keep your eye on this website for the latest summer forecast

I suffered the WORST, and I've seen lots, midge attack ever in my entire life at Invercoe. A real pity, because the site and location are brilliant.
By the time August comes, they'll have their teeth really sharp and they'll have had plenty of practice. You'd better fit a towbar and hire a tanker for the beastie repellent.

We have camped in the worst of midgiedom. There are some things that can be done that can and do help.
Firstly, dont be embarrassed to wear the midgie hoods should you need them. I put off buying them for ages because I thought they looked daft (how stupid was I?). They work a treat.
Buy the candles, the coils and everything else that can be lit OUTSIDE your unit, we generally have a circle of lit things and we sit within it. Dont ever pitch beside a river or stream no matter how pretty it is.
Midgies like calm, so camp in as open a pitch as possible.
Long sleeves, legs covered etc at night.
Use whatever repellant suits, i like smidge! And reapply.
The blighters dont put me off visiting one of the most beautiful areas in the Uk.
And p.s, the worst bites I ever got was not in Scotland but the Lake District, and it didnt put me off returning there. I was just better armed the next time!
Most of my camping is in midgedom - love that name feeblecat! - and I live in midgedom too. However, I live on coast and they're rarely a problem. See OP wants to visit NW - there are some great coastal sites up there. Not stayed at North Ledaig - but too close to home - but did camp at the C&CC site. Now that is one site that really should invest in midge machines, being enclosed in a walled garden it is midge paradise!
