Anyone know any campsites known for being good for astronomy as in dark sky areas and also with no lighting.
Probably been asked before but I couldn't find anything in the search.
I am hoping to find a good site for astronomy to take my telescopes and introduce my daughter to the wonders of the night sky, with the fun of camping thrown in too lol
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
One of only 4 places in the western world with offical Dark Sky status - Galloway Forest link Look for something nearby if you don';t fancy wild camping.

I remember being a child when my mum and dad took me on a holiday to the south coast of Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland - the darkest night sky and shooting stars were the highlight of my holiday. We did not camp but I'm sure someone on here can point you in the right direction.
------------- Camping trips for 2013...
*May half term, 5 nights - Black Bull Caravan Park, Pickering
*July/August 13 nights - Invercoe, Scotland
*October half term 6 nights - Beech Croft Farm, Buxton
I would say Fforest Fields near Builth Wells.
If the lighting on site is too much (although very controlled) for you there are lots of areas adjacent to the camping area where you can go. There are 2 lake areas and a huge field along with walks around too.
Try looking at the reviews then emailing them if you think it looks ok for you. They are opening new toilets etc very soon so don't judge by the facilities.
Have seen shooting stars with the naked eye there. Along with lots of wildlife.

As you're in Coventry you could try North Norfolk, either Deepdale or Stiffkey campsites. They are on the coast (Stiffkey out on marshes) and rural so very little light pollution.
Another vote for Fforest field on FB Katie posted a link to a a satelite picture over the UK at night- you couldn't see mid Wales as there very little light pollution.
We stayed on High Yedmandale Farm Nr.Scarborough in Nth.Yorks. in Sept. 2010. We are not Astronomers, but looking up into a really dark night sky is wonderful. This site is right up on the moors, and there is no street lighting within 1and a 1/2 miles, which is at a lot lower level than the site, plus if it goes cloudy you can have a ride out into Scarborough.
Also this site is worth downloading, and it's free!
