We have just booked to stay here for a week in the Summer. I can't wait as we will be taking the kayak, bikes and dog (it will be a miracle if i get it all in). Has anyone got any good recommendations for family biking, I may get to grizedale for more serious stuff, or anything that you think is a must do. I have spent the last hour googling and there is just so much.
Also, I am travelling from the midlands and the sat nav recommends going around the top of windermere rather than around the bottom. Has anyone done either and which is best for traffic and roads etc.
cheers

I live in the lakes! My advice re:driving & which way is dependant on when in August your trip is, the road around the top of Windermere leads through trout beck and Ambleside and get get very very busy, quite a twisty road once your out of Ambleside too.
Personally I would come off at j36 and take the route via the A590 heading towards coniston from Greenodd, not likely to be as busy and the A590 is pretty much all dual carriageway to Greenodd now ( it stops at haverthwaite)
Thanks Kelly, as it is school holidays my concern was that it would be v busy and have actually seen that the site recommend you come from the South whenever possible!
Its a few years since we have visited Park Coppice but plan to do so again next year all being well.
We always took the South route via Newby Bridge and turned up at the small white Church house pub towards Coniston. The road is still quite winding and fairly narrow in places, and those with very high Motorhomes would have to take care regarding some overhanging branches along the way, especially when having to pull tight into the side to allow another large veichle to pass, as we did manage to scratch the roof on our last caravan doing just this on our way home.

CC route in is from the South, and is a much easier drive in though the route has its moments. From the north the awkward bits are for a much longer length of road. Best advice is to follow the CC route.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Great site, I went 40 years ago on my first camping trip with my dad in a canvas ridge tent. Climb up old man of coniston and then a pint in the Black Bull in is a must! Look out for the pictures on the wall of Donald Cambell with his speedboat on the lake.

If visiting the Black Bull, its best to take along enough cash to cover your food and drinks bill, as they were accepting Cash only last time we visited, and it was causing some chaos with customers trying to order a meal without knowing this fact. The pub blamed the overheads and bank charges for card machine usage when some customers tried to use them just to buy a couple of drinks, as cash machines in the area are few and far between.

I live in Cumbria too and have been to Park Coppice with the van.
I totally agree with Kelly - off M6 at J36 and turn at Greenod and go that way. Wayyyyy better than going Windermere, Ambleside way. The traffic that way is dreadfull - full of tourists!! lol
Grizedale has marked cycle routes which are great with the kids and traffic free, another good one nr to Coniston is Tilberthwaite, park by the river/quarry, walk up to the waterfall then bike in the opp direction accross farm tracks etc through a ford to the pub! Another is a bit arduous, drive from Coniston towards the windermere ferry, 1/2m before the ferry is a left turn which takes you onto the side of the lake, there's a free carpark, bike from there north up the side of the lake then take a steep climb walking with the bikes onto the top of the hill, then either explore the paths up there or freewheel all the way down through muddy fields/paths etc all the way to the pub at the Sawrey Hotel, then a road trip back to the car...lovely
I would definatley invest in a ordanance survey explorer map which will show all the bridleways (you can bike on bridleways but not footpaths)
We were there two weeks ago and drove in from the south. As we drove around in the following days we drove out north the same route that you speak of!!! Don't do it I say.... It's far easier from the south. Have a great time we certainly did.
