Looking for a site to meet a friend for a few days somewhere between Penrith and Gretna. Just want somewhere quiet with decent pitch size (hate being crammed in) and toilets/showers. I've already spotted a couple on the campsite search but thought I would ask for personal recommendations as well

This one is on my list to visit when we are up that way.  It is between Penrith and Gretna but with a diversion East towards Haltwhistle......onsite cafe & farm shop and brand new showers & a sauna!!  Herding Hill Campsite:

jesus thats a long way out of the way! penrith to gretna is only about 26mls that campsite is abit like going to aberdeen via newcastle! lol

its only a few miles from penrith down to ullswater some nice sites there, but avoid parkfoot if you dont want to be ripped off/noise etc

It's about 30 minutes from the M6 at Carlisle.  So I didn't think that was too bad.  Yes, I admit it's travelling East, but is about equal distance for each party.

Troutbeck Head just out of Penrith towards Keswick is a nice quiet site - Caravan Club though (not sure if you're tents or vans)
