Being a hardened camper of all of 2 years now and still enthusiastic about the joys of waking up under canvas, I was sad to read a recent post about the weather this year putting off experienced tenters. I must admit that the Jubilee week's weather wasn't pleasant and the thought of more of the same over the next few weekends we've got booked in the UK is worrying myself and OH.

I am sure I'm not alone in this. Has anyone noticed any price reductions among camp sites to reflect the fact that people may be considering flying to Spain for a week of guaranteed sunshine this year or am I being totally unrealistic?

Any thoughts?

Far from noticing any reductions, we have just lost over £70 in cancelled campsite bookings due to this weather, including a £25 deposit with C&CC where we have been loyal members for over 20 years.

I'm afraid that any thoughts of getting any bargains from campsites will be nothing more than a Wet Dream!

Having said that, we are just back from a 6 night trip to Dumfries and yes, it was wet every day, but it didn't stop us fom enjoying ourselves and like you said, the sound of rain on canvas, is a great way of drifting off to sleep.

The FC and the awning is now laid out and drying off and come the next weather improvement, we will be off again, looking for a drier campsite.

We avoid school holidays and NEVER book any more the times we go all the sites were, and are, always quiet so we make a weather judgement a couple of days before and then give the chosen site a ring to make sure they can accomodate us us. I was talking to a site owner where we stayed back in June he said the only time any sites are full are 6 weeks in July/August and any bank holiday weekends or specials like the jubilee.Outside of these most site owners should be grateful for any business even at short notice we baled on a planned week back in April (ended up decorating instead!)

What I do know is that camp sites are soooo desperate for customers that they are having to ignore their own rules.

I posted this elsewhere at the beginning of the week. A young fellow who works at the NHS with my brother had a camping trip to the Lake District last weekend. As there were 25 males, all under the age of 30, they were expecting to have problems finding a site that would take them. In fact, the first site they tried they were welcomed with open arms by the owner, who explained that although it is a family camp site with a no large group policy, nobody else was there so they were welcome to camp.

Would expect that attitude to develop, as it's torrential rain in the north west of England with flood warnings in place just now and I can't see anybody but the most stupid wanting to camp in this region at the moment.

we very rarely book ahead simply because of our great british climate, even avoid booking ahead on things like rallies, even though it's cheaper than paying at the gate !! I would rather pay the extra £5 or £10 paying on the gate at the last minute when the weather is fine than losing sometimes upwards of £100 for a long weekend if it's a washout.

unfortunately the electric, gas, oil, fuel providers, council, tax man, etc are not offering discounts to site owners because of the weather. Unbelievable as it may sound if we can 'turn off' a part of the site we would be better off financially, so the theory of some money is better than none for us would just not be true, it cost quite a bit of money to run the pitch = if it's not in use then it is simply standard charges to pay - i send hubby 'out to work' to cover that!!!
