I usually stay near the lower facilities block.

For my last 2 stays, I had Pitch 166 and 167 which are in front of the caravan storage area, close to a watering point and bins point, as well as the facilities block.

I am having Pitch 165 next year which is the end of the row, with just one pitch neighbour on one side, right opposite the watering/bins point, and it is a big pitch, being the end of the row. Hence I chose it.

The first time I stayed there, I was part of a small gathering, and we were put on a small plateau of grassy pitches with EHU next to the forest. Good view of the site, however, it was quite windy, and the ground quite hard.

I was not too keen on backing up to the forest with just a few wires as barrier. Hence I prefer the pitches along the caravan storage area instead.

I believe the lower facilities block is likely to be less busy than the top block, unless the rally field is full at peak times.

I am not keen on staying near the playground as I don't like kids, sorry!

The other niggle I had about Birchwood is that the washing up area at the lower block is uncovered. The owners have every intention to have it covered, just not got round to it yet due to other priorities, like having the paddling pool renovated and putting in new doors for the top block for this year.

I believe the washing up areas for the top block is covered, however, I cannot be 100% certain.

Wareham Forest is fab - our favourite site in Dorset and great if you have dogs.  Direct forest access.

Check out their website, their new toilet/showers are out of this world.17

I don't know what sort of thing you are after so here are my thoughts on different Dorset sites I have stayed on.

Wareham Forest - good facilities, next to the forest. Quite big and ordered.

Tom's Field Swanage. Nice, smaller, more relaxed site. Pretty and near to the coast.

Silverwood Farm - Basic farm site has EHU but only one basic loo and no shower so own san ess. Fishing on site, quiet and peaceful.

Woodyhyde campsite. Pitch where you like style camping. Quite big. I was here in 2008 and the toilet block was not the nicest place I've ever been, but may have changed by now.

You don't say exactly where you want to be in Dorset but these are on the various Dorset borders.

The Mason's Arms Odcombe. (just over the Dorset border in Somerset) Lovely village pub with micro brewery, very nice facilities. Owners very friendly.

Sandy Balls- Fordingbridge Just over the border in Hampshire. Big site ordered site with Pool, pub, restaurants, activities etc. Well situated for the Dorset Coast 20 odd minutes away and the New Forest.   Nice woods and river.

Axe Farm Camping Just over the Devon border. Good but basic facilities. Along side the estuary on the coast. It is very close to 2 pubs and a short walk to Seaton.

I hope this helps a bit.

I have also stayed at C&CC's Moreton site in Dorset, and had a good time.

However, it lacks the certain something that makes Birchwood my favourite camp site.
