Me and `Er noticed in recent editions of Caravan and Camping Club magazine that the number of sites coming into that organisation`s fold were at a lower level than sites which were closing.  The incomimg sites were always in existence, so - mathematician that I am - I deduce caravan sites are closing down generally.  It`s a trend, despite "stay at home" holidays dramatically increasing.

They only close down for one reason.  Money.  So, should we be prepared to dig deeper?  After all, when you pay upwards of £13k on a new van, plus costs for servicing, storage, insurance, gas etc - the cheapest item is probably the site!  And they are pretty good.

Answers please on the back of a £20 note . . . .

Or is it because caravanners are leaning towards sites other than the Camping and Caravan Club and not using them as much as they were?

I can only talk from personal experience, but I am a member of both clubs and have been for years, yet in the last 7 or 8 years I have only used one Camping and Caravan Club site (same site on 3 or 4 occasions) and yet I use the the Caravan Club sites all the time. Thinking about it I dont know why, other than the Camping and Caravan site I stayed at  offered either grass or hardstandings but the hardstanding was only big enough for a motorhome or van. If you wanted to put an awning up it would be on the grass, some people dont mind grass, personally I prefer caravan and awning on the hardstanding and all the  Caravan Club sites I have stayed on have provided this.

Because I prefer CC sites pitches, I dont even consider looking at the CC & C site guide, which I am probably missing out on some better located sites. Currently  I also give CC my caravan insurance business as well, including European breakdown cover every year.

Are there CC & C sites with big hardstanding pitches to take car, caravan and awning pitches? If so I would definately use them?

Yes there are CC&C sites with large pitches that will happily accommodate a van, awning and a car side by side

I'm also a member of both clubs but have never stayed on a club site from either organisations, looking at some of the prices these days I think they have virtually priced themselves out of the market with some working out to more than £30 per night, even some CL / CS sites are edging towards £15 - £20 a night in some area's. At those sorts of prices it would probably work out cheaper to use a B&B if you factor in all the costs of keeping a caravan/motorhome. As a fulltimer I personally only use certain CL / CS sites with charges of no more than £10 per night including hookup, infact the one I'm on at the moment also has a shower / toilet room and free to use washing machine.

club sites as any user will say are good clean etc etc

but they are never for working people and or with children once you could stay late on sunday if pitch was available now never, non club sites are the same off by 10am some weekend when you tip up friday night.

so some of us use sites that allow a weekend away more are seeing this is the way fri from 12 till 3pm sunday a weekend away for a fixed cost.

I was on the Keswick C&CC site last week and my motorhome (just over 7ft wide) and awning (nearly 3 metres) fitted OK onto the hardstanding pitch.

I agree the prices for the CSs are going up and there are definitely a lot more CSs appearing in the Big Sites Book and fewer ordinary sites.

I`m not sure what a CL or CS site is.  But at £10 -20 a night, I`d sure like to find out!

We joined the C&CC about 3 months ago. I very much doubt we'll stay on one of their club sites as they are, like you say expensive - usually around £22+ a night with EHU.

We've stayed on our 1st CS - £15 a night with EHU and it also had a washblock (showers and toilets). We've also booked another CS at £18 a night with EHU and a washblock.

Prices are on the rise. I've worked out our "average" cost to now be around £16-£17 a night.

If we go on a site, we need a pitch, an EHU, a water tap nearby and a CDP.

Why would I want to pay site fees of £23+ when I can get all of those facilities on a CS or CL for £10 to £12 per night?

Precisely, and thinking about it I wouldn't be a member if it wasn't for CS or CL sites why be a member and pay more for their normal sites than equally good cheaper private sites
