So, 12.30am and occupants of the two unit tent next pitch down (male and female) start arguing.

1.00am - still arguing - now getting louder.

1.30am - now with sound effects (throwing all tent contents around tent -as well as still agruing).

2.00am - noise gone up a few decibels and now tent is ripped in half by the man. Call owners of site but no reply (although ex rugby playing partner wanted to go out there and i wouldnt let him--would YOU tackle folk you dont know in these days of knife/ weapon crime?)

2.30am - call owners again with no reply - got to stage where now they have no tent but have good fists to start throwing around (both of them!)

3.00am - decibels still going up.....as is my temper

3.30am - called the police. Police came and to our suprise obviuosly deemed them stable at this point and let them stay in the car for the night (well, they couldn't stay in the ripped apart tent could they).

3.50am - finally peace at last - although our lovely quiet peaceful site had been disrupted so too had our sleep pattern.

They drove off around 9am leaving all their rubbish behind. Advised the owner of the problem so he was aware in case the police needed to speak to him that day. And asked why we couldn't get hold of him when we needed to. His answer was they tend to turn the bedroom phone off in the night in case they get a fax through or someone needed to ask a question. ????????

The initial problem didnt upset us as its a part of life but i did get worried the owners were not contactable  - could have been a dire emergency they needed to know about.....is this usual that owners "switch off" some level of responsibility at night?

I have never had the problem or had to ring at night but I would imagine-if it was me, I would also turn off the phone. I think you did the right thing in calling the police. I think i'd have battered them with a tent peg to be honest lol!

Sorry, I am always contactable at night, I have been got out of bed by my hubby to help a camper sort out where he had been that day, and so where he might have left his new pair of glasses! After discussion managed to phone pub where he'd stopped for lunch, rang them at 10.30 at night, and yes they had them.

Last week the phone rang at 10.10, 4 of our campers had gone for a walk, and were lost. We chatted, I got an idea of where they were and went and picked them up.

We are only a small site, so can do this, you couldn't if you were a large commercial site, however I believe this gives us the personel touch.

Blimey sounds like fun    I too would expect there to be some way to contact a site owner in the middle of the night. Obviously I understand they need their rest too but emergencies do happen.

Glad to see you offer such a great personal service Keigcg

Excellent service keigcf  - this too was a small site but i honestly didn't know if it was a requirement of keeping a site that someone is contactable in emergencies etc having only camped 5 times before.

I have to also say that in the first instance, i only wanted to contact the site owner as i felt he wouldn't have wanted other campers to see police roaming the site that late at night. Couldve sent the wrong message to newbies there. When i spoke to the lady owner the morning after, she expressed she would've prefered the police not to have had to come for the same reason but as they werent contactable she agreed with my decision. I feel she had no choice really.

I stay at sites where there is a warden on duty 24/7 for a peace of mind.

Being contactable is part of the job. If they don't like it don't open a camp site.

What happens if someone has a heart attack at 1.00am (as I did on site). Not their problem?

What if their guests turn violent and destructive in the night as in this case in point.

I'd be appalled.

hi
sorry to hear your night was ruined, sometimes you don't know what to do for the best.

I too think owners should be contactable or at least have someone 'on call'

I stayed on a smaller site a couple of years ago where the owners where not connectable as early as 8 pm, they use a security barrier to stop caravans being removed, we were in a large bus and couldn't get back out to go the chippy, not very important but we had 4 unfed little ones.
i was more annoyed than anything as i hadn't planned to cook after working all week, driving to the site after school.work , pitching etc.

so i cooked, but then worried about how any emergency vehicle would access the site.
next morning there was an emergency on the field, (a little one and hot water), the parents just got their child in the car and rushed off to the hospital, we couldn't of done that as the barrier was still down and locked.

needless to say, when we use the bus and take the tribe, we choose sites with no barriers and an emergency on call staff number.

i understand that owners end up working all hours and doing all sorts of mad things for campers, but no matter what they should of been connectable, and i bet you weren't the only one on the field trying to get through to them.

maybe the tent less couple will give up camping ......fingers crossed

As far as I am aware there are no rules etc regarding an owner to be contactable in the night, but its common sense really to make sure someone can be contacted in the case of an emergency. Doesnt have to be the owner, but someone on site who is on hand to help out when needed.

As for the site that shuts the barrier at 8pm, thats not really on. We have a gate that is closed at 11.30pm and consider that early enough - if people have been out all day they dont want to be restricted to having to be back as early as 8pm.

hi Ang

If we had been out and came back after 8pm then we could park the bus outside of the barrier on the allocated parking and walk to the camping field, however we never got out....

Wouldn't be much good if your in a camper van or motorhome though, you would have to sleep on the car park?

Sounds really awful and I can relate:

We went to a site in Cornwall a couple of years ago.  A couple in a tent next to us caused quite a disturbance (loud rave music till 2am) and had a very heated loud arguement which was very scary for us next door as the male seemed to get quite aggressive - site had no warden and we had no idea where the owner was or lived as when we checked in nothing was given to us and we saw nobody in charge for the duration of our stay.

We left the site the following morning, as there was no person to speak to I did email the site on our arrival home to express that they seemed like "trouble" just purely out of courtesy really to let the campsite know and also to advise them that the couple were going into the private bathroom together 17!!  and I never even got a reply.    We haven't been back there since!

Reading all these posts yes we should be able to contact the owners whatever time it is. I have been on a site a few years ago now and we was kept awake by loud campers. We did not contact the owners as o/h said leave it till morning . When we told the owners they said to ring them anytime.
These sites should be named and shamed sorry if you dont all agree.

Sorry, but if a couple are causing a disturbance to the extent of violence, why not just ring the Police anyway! I certainly would have by 0200am!

We had a similar experience a few years ago on a site near Filey, the language from the couple was obscene, we were a group of 9 families with children, the couple were early forties, drunk and in a caravan.  the arguing and swearing went on into the middle of the night and then they got in their car and started driving around the field, it was pretty scary, we thought we may get flattened, when we rang the owner her said that they were regulars of his and that he would speak to them in the morning, eventually a group of the men got up and went and had a word with them and it stopped, we have never returned to that site,  j x
