Hi there can anyone help.

Phoned Sandyballs to see about a tent pitch with electric in September. Now I am new to camping and they told me that the only pitches they have are on gravel. Would this gravel damage the bottom of the sewn in ground sheet. Does anyone out there have any experience of this please?

Haven't been to that particular site but we do use gravel hardstandings for our trailer tent. We use a heavy duty tarp underneath the zip-in groundsheet of our awning and haven't had a problem. If you use a footprint under your sig that would probably be enough but it may be wise to take an extra tarp of a similar size just in case.

We occasionally pitch our tent on hard standings. When we do, we put a tarp under the footprint. We always use a footprint anyway, even when on grass.

I seem to remember someone on here saying sandy balls supply you with a "carpet" to go ununder your tent if it's got a SIG. Very expensive site though!

I have pitched on gravel.  Use a groundsheet of some sort.  It can be uncomfortable underfoot.  Picnic rugs, carpets is advised.

We've been to Sandy Balls and I must say it's brilliant there - we had a great time :-)
All the pitches are gravel and we too have a tent. The gravel is very fine and compact rather than stones/shingle. We had the tent's footprint down first, the SIG for the tent and then the tent carpet inside the tent and it was fine - no worse than camping on hard dry ground.
My only warning is that you MUST have rock pegs - we used these http://www.amazon.co.uk/25cm-ROCK-PEGS-4pc-BAG/dp/B00476QZN4. We have various pegs and the only ones that worked were the proper rock pegs so make sure you have them otherwise you won't be able to pitch anywhere LOL. Oh, and a lump hammer is also a necessity unless you want to spend ages trying to hammer them in with a rubber mallet!
