I went camping a couple of weekends ago at a car club national weekend. I had a great time with me plus the three boys, but a question has been raised on their forum.
Is it unfair to charge a flat rate per tent with up to two adults? This means that the single campers are spending the same as families. In one case, there was a family with a huge tent, three teenage children and two cars. In theory they were spending the same as some members who turned up with a 2 man tent in one car.
How do real campsites charge? Is it just a set amount per pitch and what you fit on it is your business? Or extra for adults and/or cars?
cheers
Graham

Some campsites charge per pitch others per person and some campsites do a mixture of both. If you are a single camper you will find per pitch expensive if you are family cheap. The UK does not have a set pricing policy and you just need to decide if the price is right for you before you stay.
The Camping and Caravan Club sites charge per person. The smaller CS (certified sites) normally charge per pitch but are cheaper at around £10-15 per night which may include EHU.
In our experience most commercial sites charge per adult, then to varying degrees extra for kids, then extra for dogs, extra cars, trailers, boats.....
If the pitch is to include 2 adults and 1 car then the family of 5 with 2 cars will be paying a lot more than than 2 people with one car because the 3 teenagers and the additional car will be charged extra

Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again

When people start to tire of the English weather and start going abroad again then you can be assured that pricing will be more tailored to suit the less trendy ones among us.

I can understand the question but do they also raise this question with house prices?
I think the single campers that feel they are being ripped off should be able to understand the 'family' view. As a family with three young children there is only the ability for 2 wage earners but child care cost would be incurred (so only 1 full time worker here) and therefore the per person disposable income would be less than a single persons on an average wage.
When looking for sites in Cornwall one site wanted £49 a night for our family but two adults could have the same size pitch for £35.50, I know this includes 'private' beach, swimming pool & facilities but £17.25 each adult if only two adults or £24.50 each adult and squeeze a family of 5 in a pitch the same size as two adults only paying £17.25 each seems steep. We opted for a basic site where the pitch fee was £12 a night + £3 EHU and £1 per child, in the 10 days we were there we didn't get chance to go swimming so the more expensive site would have been a waste of money for us. That said it (more expensive site) did have a tent show on which we popped in to see and it turns out the only facility not open to the public was the pool! I had the best cream tea there and hubby had a pint of the local ale while the children played in the soft play area after we had spent a while on the 'private' beach.
I am happy to pay per person if the total fee is reasonable which falls at each individuals discreation, as has been said on many site fees debates regardless of how its calculated if your unhappy with the total pitch fee per night don't stay there. If I see a smaller group of adults in a tent larger than ours it doesn't get my back up that they may be paying a fraction less than us, maybe the single campers should group together in a larger tent to get better value for money ie 2 people in 4 man (2 bedroom) tent but then I'm sure they would complain about spending money on a larger tent.

But the camp sites don't force you to have the children
Also two adults, plus 3 kids, will use more water and other facilities, as well as cause more wear on a pitch
I prefer that a campsite charges for a pitch and extra for each adult and child. OK if the flat rate for a campsite is £15 a night I don't suppose anyone is going to argue but if the all inclusive fee were £35 couples would be at a disadvantage. I suppose we all have the option of looking around for the site best for our own needs.
Some charge per person (adult + kids rates) some charge per pitch to include adults + kids some charge for showers some dont, some charge for cars some dont. Some charge silly money for EHU, some dont.
The list is endless.
Just do your research and take your pick. The best value sites will clearly do better than those that charge you to breath their air.
I dont have a maximium per night fee limit. If the sites where I want to be and it has good reviews I will give it a try. You only get 'stuffed' by a campsite once in your life. There are plenty of great sites out there
