Anyone know any nice reasonable sites that just charge per tent per night? where you dont pay extras? we have found one...its in osmington mills near weymouth, its either £13 a night any tent any size or £83 for a wk. Its basic but kids love it and its the only place we've found that only charges for tent! no car charge no gazebo charge no extra people! can anyone else share a site that does this also?

We charge per tent for up to 4 people, however we decided to charge for extra people when we had a tent with 17 people in it. Didnt seem quite right. Still no charge for extra cars though.

We don't charge for extra cars/awnings /dogs trailers etc, only charge for extra people as we also had a large family once, and it really isn't fair when they are parked next to a single camper17

Actually when you both put it like that I totally understand :) I guess as a family of 6 trying to book a hol you forget the details like that! we dont have a family car so husband and ekdest travel in 2seater van with luggage and me and 3 kids go by train, so we have to put travel cost on top too. Your costs sound reasonable though, to much extra charges always puts me off. Can I enquire where you are and your prices? :D

The secret garden in Wisbech charges a flat rate of £10 per pitch and is a lovely site (my children loved it) and Cherry Cottage camping, Camelford only charge £1 per extra person which I felt was very reasonable for such a friendly well kept site.

I suppose we are all trying to pay the least possible for our holidays. You have to think if it is fair for...

a lone traveller,
a couple,
a small family,
a large family or
an extended family & friends...

all pay the same amount for a pitch.

Me and my husband haven't done much camping yet but what I figure out when planning a holiday is whether we would pay less to camp or, as we have done in the past, book some cheap Travelodge rooms and have a Travelodge holiday. I have to admit, I didn't realise how much a campsite pitch cost prior to us buying the equipment.

If you are a member of the C&CC, most CS's charge a flat fee.

Yes We were caught out once. We booked on 'pitch up' in advance for 3 people to stay on a site (2 adults and a child) but then the site wanted us to pay for how ever many people the tent was designed to sleep which was 6. So the site wanted us to pay for 6 people even though only 3 were staying, only 3 people using the facilities. They only have to provide the ground space and the toilet block! We have already bought the tent (accommodation) and brought it with us. By the time they had priced for 6 people, the car, the dog etc, it was between £40 to £50 per night. For a holiday in Wales where the weather is changeable to say the least. Camping for us needs to be a cheap holiday for the family and so when you can stay in an Inn where a family room with cooked breakfast for £55 all in for the 3 of us (2016 price) out of the rain, clean and dry, no extensive packing or putting the tent up then the sites charging fees like this are damaging the future of camping. Needless to say (although we were very disappointed) we cancelled the booking and booked a ferry over to France where the camp sites always charge per pitch size and the weather was lovely and it still worked out cheaper even taking into account the ferry crossing and fuel. We still love UK holidays, still love camping and hope to find a less penny pinching site in the UK this year. Yes by all means charge for the pitch size (small, medium or large) and per person staying but not for design of the tent.......

You have to remember that most Campsite's major costs will be water/electricity/gas/wastewater/sewage/refuse disposal etc. Every extra person increases these costs and therefore an additionnal charge is to be expected.

I come across sites that have a per person price but then cap it at a certain price. The example I am thinking of cap the price at £22 however if a family of 17 turned up I think that would ruin the cap idea.

That's just bonkers. Nearly everyone uses a tent that could theoretically accommodate a bigger party, they were just taking the pee.
